Champaign-Urbana’s Favorite Soups

When the temperature drops, let a cup of the Champaign-Urbana area’s best soup help you get warm

Soup is the ultimate comfort food. From flavorful concoctions following recipes originating around the globe to classic, creamy goodness, you can find a wide variety of soups in Champaign-Urbana. Here are a few stand-outs, focused on locally owned restaurants or businesses around Champaign-Urbana and beyond. (This list is in alphabetical order.)

Pho Noodle Station
Pho Noodle Station

Bunny’s Tavern, Urbana: Made from scratch, and rotating throughout different soups of the day. Every day they have chili, too.

Carle Foundation Hospital Cafeteria, Urbana: Roasted red pepper gouda soup paired with grilled cheese is a winning combination. We’re grateful for the opportunity to get a warm meal with whatever circumstance brings us to Carle Hospital.

Common Ground Food Co-op, Urbana: Common Ground’s grab-and-go section features a rotation of different soups, all of which are winners. One stand-out is the ground nut stew.

Dos Reales, Champaign: Dos Reales has a delicious chicken soup. Officially on the menu as, “Caldo de Pollo con Arroz” (chicken broth with rice).

El Toro, multiple locations: Try the Siete Mares (seafood soup) at Toro Loco.

Esquire Lounge, Champaign: Esquire has delicious soups, including chili on the weekends. Check their menu because soups rotate through specific days of the week.

Harvest Market, Champaign: Harvest Market is a favorite of our team, and we think our readers agree, too. They always have a number of soups on rotation, with the largest selection during the lunch hour (but many options in the evening, too).

Huaraches Moroleon, Urbana: Huaraches Moroleon offers several delicious soups, but the tortilla soup is the one we hear the most about.

I Wok, Savoy: The hot and sour soup and wonton soup are great go-to soups here, but you can’t go wrong with any of them.

La Mixteca Restaurant, Urbana: If you want pozole, go try La Mixteca.  Pozole is known for clearing your sinuses, if that is something you need!

Manzella’s Italian Patio Restaurant, Champaign: A classic minestrone is available at Manzella’s.

Martinelli’s, Champaign: Matzo ball soup is what is on the menu at Martinelli’s. Made in-house and the place to go if you want matzo ball soup in C-U!

Oozu Ramen, Champaign: Try the spicy miso at Oozu Ramen if you want something with a kick.

Pekara, Champaign: A couple recommendations are the roasted red pepper and gouda soup and the creamy parmesan sausage and kale.

Pho Noodle Station, Champaign: Build your own pho (pictured above at the top of this article) and completely delicious. Fully customizable!

Piato, Champaign: Whether you visit the food truck or you are catering in lunch for the office, Piato delivers when it comes to homemade and delicious soup.

Rainbow Garden, Champaign: Another place to get hot and sour soup, but try the sizzling rice soup, too. It is full of veggies, proteins, and the same kind of rice you might find in a crispy chocolate bar.

Red Herring, Urbana: Red Herring’s soup is delicious. You can visit the grab and go counter, to take soup home to enjoy with your family.

Seven Saints, Champaign: Seven Saint’s tomato bisque soup is a stand-out on the menu, especially good ordered with the cheese curds! Other recommendations are chicken tortilla, brie soup and chili. Seven Saints is a team chambanamoms favorite, too.

Siam Terrace, Urbana: An enthusiastic recommendation for Tom Kha Gai if you find yourself at Siam Terrace.

Strawberry Fields Cafe, Urbana: Try to catch the lentil soup at Strawberry Fields. They have fresh homemade soup, made daily.

Sun Singer, Champaign: Another place that features soup of the day, try to catch the mushroom brie soup or lobster bisque.

Susuru Ramen, Champaign: Another great ramen spot in C-U, Susuru Ramen offers many delicious options on their menu. Some of their lunch specials include ramen plus other menu items, too.

Thara Thai, Champaign: Try the Shrimp Tom Kha Gai, but really any of the noodle soups here.

The Bread Company, Urbana: French onion soup is the star at The Bread Company on Goodwin.

The Courier Cafe, Urbana: Vegetarian chili, lentil soup, chicken noodle soup and white chicken chili are all soups to mention at the Courier. A great option for a bowl of soup really any day of the week.

Xinh Xinh Café, Urbana: Pho Tai Nam soup is another soup known for clearing sinuses.
