Champaign-Urbana’s Favorite Pies

Whoever said “easy as pie” never had to decide on one flavor

Are you a fruit pie fanatic? Or do you prefer one that is creme-based?

Whether you are looking to bake your pies at home, or purchase them ready-to-eat, the Champaign-Urbana area offers many delightful options that are sure to please the most discerning pie experts out there.

Pies vs. tarts — Many of the establishments listed below make both pies, which generally have a top crust, and tarts, which are generally open on top, have a crumb-based bottom, and come in multiple sizes. While we decided to focus this article on pies, we would be remiss if we did not mention Tasty Tart (Champaign), Suzu’s Bakery (Champaign), and Rick’s Bakery (Urbana) for their amazing tart options.

As with all of our “favorite food” lists, we focus on locally owned restaurants around Champaign-Urbana and beyond. (This list is in alphabetical order.)

Curtis Orchard & Pumpkin Patch, Champaign: Featuring apple, cherry, peach, pecan, and pumpkin pie, as well as blueberry cobbler, Curtis Orchard is a popular favorite amongst Champaign-Urbana residents. It also features frozen pies which can be taken home and baked when last minute guests arrive at your house. Also helpful to throw a couple in the freezer before they close for the season at the conclusion of the holiday season.

Pies by Inge, Monticello: With over 50 varieties of freshly baked pies, Pies by Inge has pies to please just about anyone at your table. Two days notice is appreciated for pie orders. All pies are baked fresh from scratch. Have unexpected company coming over? Pies by Inge can help with some frozen, ready-made pies. Just unwrap the pie, thaw at room temperature, and reheat if you wish. The pies look as if they were fresh out of the oven and taste just like it, too. Note: Pies by Inge is located inside The Brown Bag Deli.

Po’ Boys Restaurant, Urbana: Po’ Boys is a great destination for pie sold by the slice. We hear their coconut cream pie is top notch. While you’re there, have another type of pie: pizza.

The New Sweet Indulgence, Champaign: Featuring seasonal favorites such as key lime, peach, pumpkin, and more, The New Sweet Indulgence has a variety of palate-pleasing pies. One reader weighed one of their peach pies and it came in at just under ten pounds. That’s a lot of pie!

The Wheelhouse, St. Joseph: The Wheelhouse makes some amazing cherry pie. Try it for dessert!

Yoder’s Kitchen, Arthur: A little farther drive and one of our “destination restaurants“, you can get your slice of “country fresh” pie, but well worth a trip. Another entry in the coconut cream wars, too. Yoder’s desserts are all-around delicious.

As always, please contact the establishment to make sure that the pie of your choice is available at the time of your choosing.

Is there a Champaign-Urbana area restaurant or bakery that isn’t on our list for their amazing pies? Email us and tell us what makes their pie list-worthy.
