Champaign-Urbana's Favorite French Fries

French fries are one of our most favorite fried food indulgences and we offer a list of where to find the best ones

Whether you dip your fries in ketchup, honey mustard cheese, or aioli, a simple dish becomes so much more with the perfect accompaniments. Classic fries or true culinary delicacy, Champaign-Urbana offers a wide variety to choose from. Though it should go without saying, there are no rules that you must order more than fries (burger, sandwich, etc.) and we won’t judge you for showing up just to try a heaping plate of fries if we see you at one of these stops around town.

As with all of our “favorite food” lists, we focus on locally owned restaurants around Champaign-Urbana and beyond. (This list is in alphabetical order.)

Aspen Tap House, Champaign: Both truffle and regular fries on the menu here, and we think you’ll enjoy both.

Baldarotta’s Porketta and Sicilian Sausage, Urbana: Baldarotta ‘s house fries are amazing! Loaded porketta fries are a house specialty.

Big Grove Tavern, Champaign: The truffle fries may be called “heaven on a plate.” They are crispy and flavorful, too. Share them with someone else at the table!

Billy Barooz, Champaign: Billy Barooz sweet potato fries are famous in Champaign-Urbana. Possibly the very best sweet potato fries we have in town!

The Blind Pig, Champaign: This new-to-the-restaurant-scene establishment serves up some delicious fries. Crispy, classic and delicious next to a burger (or other sandwich) of your choice.

Boomerang’s Bar & Grill, Urbana: Homemade bar french fries that are salty and crispy. A bar food staple!

Courier Cafe, Urbana: There are great fries at the Courier. We don’t know what is in the batter, but we know it makes for a delicious fry.

Dewey’s, Farmer City: One of our “small town places to eat“, Dewey’s Drive-In is open seasonally, making a trip to Dewey’s even more special during the warmer-weather months.

Farren’s at the Inman, Champaign: Add the truffle salt and thank us later.

Fiesta Cafe, Champaign: Theese fries are delicious! Perhaps someone in your party wants fries instead of the other delicious items on the menu to keep it simple.

Guido’s Bar and Grill, Champaign: Guido’s fries are some of the best bar fries around!

It’ll Do, Mahomet: Classic bar fries found in Mahomet. We definitely recommend ordering a basket of these.

Lazy Daisy Diner & Cafe, Urbana: Delicious fries at this new Urbana diner, and you can get them with an optional curry spice blend.

Legends Bar and Grill, Champaign: Try Legends’ loaded fries for cheesy bacon-y goodness.

Murphy’s Pub, Champaign: We drive to campustown just to get Murphy’s fries. Really.

Niro’s Gyros, Champaign and Urbana: Not fancy, just delicious. Try them with the Greek dipping sauce!

The Ribcage, St. Joseph: We love the waffle fries served up alongside The Ribcage’s BBQ meats.

Sam’s Cafe, Champaign: Enjoy the crinkle cut fries at this quintessential small-town diner.

Shawarma Joint, Champaign: We hear these fries are some of the best in town! They serve a variety of food here, mostly Mediterranean. You can get gyros, among many other dishes, to enjoy your fries with.

Seven Saints, Champaign: If you can’t decide between Seven Saints’ waffle fries or their sweet potato fries, have the person you’re dining with order one so you can split both together.

Smith Burger, Champaign, Urbana (The Yard) and food truck: We love the classic cut french fries you get next to your Smith Burger. No matter where you are visiting them (Champaign, Urbana at The Yard or right off the food truck), the fries are reliably crispy and delicious. We hear people like the cajun version, too.

Sun Singer Restaurant, Champaign: Sun Singer’s parmesan truffle fries with aioli are the best of the best! They have just the right amount of crunch!

Watson’s Chicken, Champaign, Urbana (The Yard) and food truck: These waffle fries might be the best waffle fries in Champaign-Urbana. Like Smith Burger, you have a number of places you can order Watson’s fries and we can attest to them all being great choices.

The Wheelhouse, St. Joseph: The Wheelhouse’s fries taste like real potatoes and are cooked perfectly. Try them dusted with salt and vinegar!

Windy City Express, Urbana: Their fries are crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and taste like no other fries in town — the perfect amount of salt. Always fresh, hot and delicious.
