Where to Eat Sushi in Champaign-Urbana

February 5, 2024 By From The Editors

Tantalize your taste buds with the best sushi in Champaign-Urbana

Did you know that the term sushi originally just referred to the rice inside the ever popular “sushi rolls?” This traditional Japanese favorite has become a staple to many readers in Champaign-Urbana and it is a popular question received at Chambanamoms: “Where can I go to get good sushi in Champaign-Urbana?”

We asked for your suggestions and your recommendations did not disappoint.

Fun fact: Illinois football coach Bret Bielema’s favorite food is sushi.

While Sam’s Club, Meijer, and Schnucks all received many honorable mentions for their extensive sushi selections, we list locally owned restaurants and businesses in our food trail posts. One sushi aficionado makes sure to ask for soy, ginger, and wasabi when placing an order. As she says, “It’s just things that are not typically kept on hand and you can’t easily ask for more once you get back home.”

Here are your most suggested sushi establishments around Champaign-Urbana:

Cheese and Crackers, 1715 W. Kirby Ave., Champaign: Buy your own sushi grade fish and make sashimi style sushi at home.

Harvest Market, 2029 S. Neil St., Champaign: Harvest Market makes its sushi fresh near the deli. It is quite good!

KoFusion, 30 E. Main St., Champaign: Mentioned time and time again, C-U couples and families find their way to KoFusion for great sushi downtown and special celebrations. Some favorites: Flaming Phoenix, Big Roll, Crunch, Coconut Mango, and Firecracker.

Kung Fu Tea, 707 S. 6th St., Suite 107, Champaign: Kung Fu Tea has a build-your-own sushi burrito (like a fat roll) and poke bowl (deconstructed sushi roll in a bowl). Bonus: get your boba there, too!

Oishi Asian Cuisine, 2501 N. Prospect Ave., Champaign: Oishi has a huge menu and is great if someone in your party doesn’t like sushi (it has other options). The lunch special is a good deal! We hear readers talking about the Sexy Roll most often.

Sakanaya, 403 E. Green St., Champaign: We hear a lot of recommendations for Sakanaya, too. A C-U staple for more than 10 years now, you can find it on Green Street in the heart of Campustown.

Sakura, 132 W. Main St., Urbana: Sakura dishes up more excellent Japanese food. We like the atmosphere there, too.

Sushi Kame, 39 E. Green St., Champaign: Sushi Kame makes great sushi to-go with a convenient parking lot right outside the restaurant — key when you’re heading into campus. You get some freebies with your order as an added bonus.

Sushi Man, 308 E. Green St. and 2028 N. Prospect, Champaign: With two locations, one on campus and one next to Target, Sushi Man has you covered. Best known for its all-you-can-eat sushi deal, you get 90 minutes to eat as much sushi as you possibly can. Don’t over-order though; you’ll be charged for each piece you don’t eat. Your sushi will be delivered by a robot, too!

Sushi Siam, 1731 W. Kirby Ave., Champaign: Great sushi and poke bowls to be found at this Champaign gem. We have a full review of Sushi Siam.
