Where to Eat Sushi in Champaign-Urbana

January 4, 2021 By From The Editors

Tantalize your taste buds with the best sushi in Champaign-Urbana

Did you know that the term sushi originally just referred to the rice inside the ever popular “sushi rolls?” This traditional Japanese favorite has become a staple to many readers in Champaign-Urbana and it is a popular question received at Chambanamoms: “Where can I go to get good sushi in Champaign-Urbana?” (Fun fact: New Illinois football coach Bret Bielema’s favorite food is sushi.) We asked for your suggestions and your recommendations did not disappoint.

While Sam’s Club, Meijer, and Schnucks all received many honorable mentions for their extensive sushi selections, we list locally owned restaurants and businesses in our food trail posts. One sushi aficionado makes sure to ask for soy, ginger, and wasabi when placing an order. As she says, “It’s just things that are not typically kept on hand and you can’t easily ask for more once you get back home.”

Here are your most suggested sushi establishments around Champaign-Urbana:

Cheese and Crackers, 1715 W. Kirby Ave., Champaign: “We buy sushi grade fish from Cheese and Crackers and make sushi at home. We like to eat it sashimi style. Delicious.”

Harvest Market, 2029 S. Neil St., Champaign: “I’ve had really good sushi at Harvest Market. It is made fresh and prepackaged near the deli.” “Go at the right time of day and you can watch your sushi being made right before your eyes.”

KoFusion, 30 E. Main St., Champaign: “We love the new KoFusion. They have a beautiful outdoor seating area.” “We order takeout from KoFusion. They have a super easy online ordering system.”

Kung Fu Tea, 707 S. 6th St., Suite 107, Champaign: “Kung Fu Tea has a build-your-own sushi burrito (like a fat roll) and poke bowl (deconstructed sushi roll in a bowl) that we like to order.”

Miga, 301 N. Neil St., Champaign: “Miga’s sushi is NUTS!”

Moki Sushi, 2017 S. Neil St., Champaign: “Moki is pretty new (next to Harvest Market) and REALLY good. Their mango tango roll is my favorite!” (See our review of Moki Sushi.)

Oishi Asian Cuisine, 2501 N. Prospect Ave., Champaign: “Oishi has a huge menu, and is great if someone in your party doesn’t like sushi (they have other options).” ”Oishi’s Jimmy’s Sexy Roll is amazing! I’ve not been too adventurous other than that (maybe had 3 or 4 other rolls), but that is the bomb!” “Oishi has a lunch special for sushi that are a great deal!” “Try the Jimmy’s Sexy Roll. You’ll thank me later.”

Sakanaya, 403 E. Green St., Champaign: “Sakanaya has the best sushi, hands down!” “Sakanaya is the best without hesitation, and we actually just finished ordering for tonight. If ordering sushi from there, you must spring for the gyoza — they’re stellar.”

Siam Terrace, 212 W. Main St., Urbana: “We love the sushi bar at Siam Terrace. Make sure to try the Hosomaki Combo.”

Sushi Kame, 39 E. Green St., Champaign: “Sushi Kame is fantastic – my absolute favorite! Their service is outstanding and I always feel like family there.” “Their rolls are delicious, reasonably priced and you get free miso soup and cold noodles with your order.” “We love Sushi Kame!” “It’s our go-to.”

Sushi Siam, 1731 W. Kirby Ave., Champaign: “We love the service, sushi, and poke bowls at Sushi Siam!” (See our review of Sushi Siam.)
