One response absolutely blew us away. Local dad Jason Rackow, who professes his love for nachos at Destihl, but also many other places, dissects the Champaign-Urbana nacho scene below. (Normally we don’t identify reader comments in these pieces, but this is so impassioned that credit needs to be given where credit is due!) All of the places Rackow mentions received many other votes from readers:
“I think Destihl, but man oh man are we blessed to live in this city. The Black Dog nachos are also superb. It seems EVERYONE has an elevated Nacho dish in this city, and they’re all so unique. Sunsinger pot roast nachos are excellent because they’re an elevated play on a more traditional nacho. What Destihl did with their skillet nachos is almost difficult to put into words. It’s stunning. Liquid and melted cheese combining into layered thin chips with pork…. WOW. If you go to Black Dog and get their smoked chip nachos with brisket, you’ll be making an incredible decision. Ghost pepper. Drink water. These three are the big winners for me. Maize is great. The “SMOKED” food truck has brisket nachos that are also heavenly. A lot of people are saying Billy Barooz. I can’t wait to try those. I was most surprised by Sun Singer’s pretty cool nacho dish. The meat just disappears in your mouth. I want this city to have a NACHO EXPO. We need to think about the things that bring us all together. Right now, that’s nachos.”
Billy Barooz, Champaign (at the Crossing, southwest): “Hands down!” “I gotta say, Billy Barooz also, pretty good.” “Best steak nachos!!!!” ” Brisket nachos at Billy Barooz are awesome.” “predictable but great.” ” I would sell one of my kids for some nachos from Billy Barooz!”
Sun Singer, Champaign (Windsor Galleria, between Prospect and Mattis): “Sunsingers are simply the best, period.” “Pot Roast Nachos from Sun Singer are my favorite!”
Guido’s, Champaign (downtown): Chicken nachos, there is literally no competition. My husband and I have travelled far and wide and lived in three different sates and Guido’s ruined us for nachos. They are divine. We can’t find a stand in!” Multiple mentions.
Old Chicago, Champaign (by Marketplace Mall): “I personally like the Italian nachos from ole Chicago. We split between four of us and it fills us up.” “ They’re FAB!!!” “Those are a family favorite for us too! Definitely my dad’s favorite!”
Black Dog, Champaign and Urbana locations: multiple mentions.
Maize Mexican Grill, Champaign (downtown and near campus): “veggie nachos with their red salsa! Yummy.” Multiple mentions.
Destihl, downtown Champaign: multiple mentions.
Cowboy Monkey, downtown Champaign: multiple mentions.
