Champaign-Urbana Area Crafters and Makers Gift Guide

November 5, 2020 By From The Editors

2020 has proven to be anything but typical. One thing that we have seen around Champaign-Urbana is an overwhelming sense of community and desire to help one another. As the holiday season approaches, we have had many questions already at Chambanamoms on how to spend money around the community and to help each other. Crafters around Central Illinois have submitted their information for consideration in your holiday shopping. Happy shopping!  Please note that all information was up-to-date at time of publishing this post.

What the business does: S2R Crafts is a mom to teen humans, reptiles and a pug. She has a full time career but loves to craft when she can. She started with one sewing machine borrowed from a friend, and has made more than 800 masks since April 2020. She started donating all of her masks, but supplies are beginning to get expensive.

Focusing on masks, dog bandanas, and bowl cozies. Will add eco-friendly products in the future.

Who it is geared toward: Everyone

What the business does: QuirkyCraftopia learned how to sew because they wanted to make bandanas for their dog. They quickly fell in love with sewing. When the need for masks arise, they switched to making masks for the community. They have donated over 500 masks so far. They decided to open an Etsy shop to continue sharing love, not germs — with a mission of making everyone look super dapper with their pup! Check out their colorful masks, bandanas, and matching mask-bandanas combo. They also make microwavable bowl cozies to protect hands from hot or cold meals. And will continue to add products (e.g. cloth napkins).

Oxidants Happen Studios

Sells handmade clothes, home décor, and accessories, as well as greeting cards and prints featuring their artwork.

Who it is geared toward: Everyone

What the business does: An eclectic assortment of creations: menswear, womenswear, children’s clothing, face masks, paintings, stickers, or t-shirts. Victorian lace meets hand-dyed cottons and silks. Blown glass jewelry or crochet hats. You never know what you’ll find when you shop Oxidants Happen Studios, but it’s bound to be a high quality, unique, handmade item that has been made to last. They use a variety of materials in sewn and handmade items, most of which have been sourced from local thrift stores and fabric outlets. They like to use vintage or “recycled” fabrics whenever possible, meaning that some of the materials they use may have lived a past life as a button-down shirt, tablecloth, bath towel or set of drapes. They are also fond of 100 percent cotton laces, and have built a curated collection of Victorian and turn-of-the-century laces over the years, which they love to use in women’s and children’s garments. They like natural fibers, mismatched buttons, and creating garments with a sense of history and soul.
