It is that time of year – the fair is about to begin!

Families can choose from many events and activities happening this weekend in Champaign-Urbana

There are many events throughout the year that punctuate a family in Champaign-Urbana’s experience when it comes to family fun and the Champaign County Fair is certainly on that list. We will feature a number of events below that are NOT tied to carnival rides, funnel cakes or demolition derbies but know that we are SO excited that the fair has made its way to town!

Don’t overlook the daytime experience at the Champaign County Fair and head out during the day to watch some of the livestock shows while grabbing food from your favorite stands, too.

Champaign County Forest Preserves

Saturday, July 25, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Come out for an exciting and family-friendly event at the Peninsula at Lake of the Woods, brought to you by the Forest Preserves in partnership with the Upper Sangamon River Conservancy. Summer Splash features a variety of activities including fishing, canoeing, kayaking, pedal boats, educational exhibits, live music, and more! FREE.

Participants can save time by signing a waiver ahead of time. New this year — FREE shuttle service from Champaign (Dodds Park) and Urbana (Crystal Lake Park) to Lake of the Woods! Note your interest in the shuttle when you fill out the waiver.

Land Conservation Foundation

Poetry at the Preserve
Saturday, August 1, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Attendees are invited to share meaningful poems or short pieces of literature of their choosing with the group if desired. This will take place in the woods – please make sure to dress and prepare accordingly. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own foldable chairs. After wrapping up the spoken word portion of the event, they will embark on a short hike and have an opportunity to write down their experiences while enjoying the surrounding landscape. Notebooks and writing utensils will be provided to attendees. Whether you’re an experienced poet or simply enjoy being outdoors, all are welcome.

Urbana Arts and Culture Program

Sunday, July 26, 11 a.m.

Join the Urbana Arts and Culture Program and Illinois Shakespeare Festival for Get, Set, Romeo and Juliet!, a lively 40-minute Theatre for Young Audiences production by Nancy Steele Brokaw, directed by Lori Adams.

This fast-paced romp through one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays is perfect for the young and young-at-heart. Experience mystery, sword fights, romance, and big questions about fate and choice as Romeo and Juliet’s story comes to life in a fun, engaging performance for all ages.

Everyone is welcome, and admission is free!
