Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 9, which does not happen to fall on the University of Illinois’ graduation day this year
If you are looking for restaurants to dine at with mom in order to celebrate without cooking, you’ve come to the right place. If you are interested in carrying out or ordering catering, we’ve included a few options for that, as well. Here is a list of some of our favorite local spots as well as some out-of-town options if you’re looking to avoid crowds and waiting in lines.
Baldarotta’s Porketta & Sicilian Sausage, 300 S. Broadway Ave., Urbana: Baldarotta’s is featuring a special Mother’s Day Menu from 12-3 p.m on May 9. The menu consists of spring vegetable gnocchi, lemon rosemary chicken, squash medley and stuffed tomatoes, spinach salad, and house focaccia. A special black and pink cookie will also be served.
Big Grove Tavern, 1 E. Main Street, Champaign: A brunch menu will be served on Mother’s Day from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Reservations are definitely recommended. Call (217) 239-3505 to get a table saved.
Hamilton Walker’s, 201 N. Neil St., Champaign: A Mother’s Day Benedict brunch will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Your choice of bacon, crab cake, stuffed beef tenderloin, Florentine, smoked salmon, or shrimp and salmon Benedict. Mother’s Day lunch options consist of grilled chicken caesar, shrimp and spinach salad, center cut filet mignon, grilled herb chicken sandwich, or aged steak burger. Sides, desserts, and brunch beverages are also available. Bottomless mimosas are available for purchase with the addition of an entree. A kids’ menu is available upon request.
Piato Catering, 804 E. Main St., Urbana: Choose between baked caprese chicken (GF), honey dijon roasted pork loin (DF), spinach artichoke lasagna (Vegetarian), or vegan Spanakopita Pie (Vegetarian, GF, and DF). Starches include party potatoes, green onion and parsley jasmine rice, or garlic and herb roasted Yukon potatoes. Vegetable options include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, or a roasted green medley. Desserts include strawberry pie, chocolate and raspberry cupcakes, or mixed berry crisp. All meals come with Blue Moon Farm Greens, balsamic vinaigrette dressing, roasted tomato soup and a garlic and herb roll (GF or vegan bread can be substituted upon request). Tasty Tart, 405 S. Neil St. Suite C, Champaign: Order your limited edition Mother’s Day treats with 4 limited edition, special flavors – lemon yogurt, tiramisu, berry sweet, and raspberry chocolate. Order here by May 5 to ensure pickup on May 8 or 9.
TCBY, 1731 W. Kirby Ave., Champaign: TCBY is offering the first 6 ounces of yogurt for free to moms on Mother’s Day during their regular business hours.
ELSEWHERE IN THE AREA
Bayern Stube, 209 N. Sangamon Ave., Gibson City: Bayern Stube is a unique, quaint restaurant in downtown Gibson City that serves authentic, German cuisine. Local favorites include schnitzels, sausages and strudels. You can’t go wrong with its beer selection either. Seating capacity is limited at this time due to COVID restrictions; therefore, reservations are highly recommended. Brunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., but the restaurant will be open until 8 p.m. Mother’s Day specials are being finalized at this time. More fun in Gibson City? Beef House Restaurant, 16501 N, IN-63, Covington, Ind.: Located just past the Illinois/Indiana border (insider tip: don’t forget the time change — they are one hour ahead of us), the Beef House Restaurant is less than an hour’s drive from Champaign and worth the trip for its famous rolls, jam, apple butter, and of course, steaks. Hours on Sundays are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; however, there are no reservations for Mother’s Day. See our review of the Beef House here.
Big Thorn Farm & Brewery, 14274 E. 600 North Rd., Georgetown: Serving Mother’s Day Brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., they will be featuring a special menu from the truck as well as ultra-delicious, giant beermosas. The Tree Bar will be open, and The Greenhouse Bar will be open for seating in case of rain. No reservations are required. Enjoy beermosas in the outdoor, open space.
Firefly Grill, 1810 Avenue of Mid-America, Effingham: Firefly Grill is about an hour and 15 minutes south of Champaign, has a garden on-site and is committed to buying locally to give its diners a complete farm-to-table experience. Situated next to a lake, Firefly Grill offers a great atmosphere as well as a delicious menu. 3 Ravens, 108 S. Charter St., Monticello: Enjoy lunch, dinner or drinks at the family-owned, full service restaurant in downtown Monticello, which claims to feature the best selection of Irish Whiskey in downstate Illinois. Epiphany Farms, 220 E. Front St., Bloomington: Epiphany Farms offers farm-to-table cooking and will be open on Mother’s Day from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. At this time, Epiphany anticipates serving brunch from 9-3. Call ahead to confirm details as plans for brunch were being made at the date of this publishing. Reservations are encouraged by calling (309) 635-8707.
