A Mahomet family known for its superhero Christmas lights show has brought its display out of hibernation to bring joy and spread cheer.
Elisa and Joe Dodge wanted to bring joy to neighbors and all who drive by. They also added a message: superheroes can be healing to all, and there are many REAL superheroes out there who are keeping our community safe and healthy at this time.
The family put up its superheroes on the lawn on Friday afternoon in about five hours, Elisa Dodge said. They added a new sign, which salutes medical personnel and other essential workers.
“My husband started thinking about what he could do that could bring some joy to people during this time,” Elisa Dodge said. “The superheroes have always been his thing. He kind of jokingly brought it up and within a few days decided to go for it!”
We first featured the Dodge family’s superhero-themed Christmas lights display in 2016. Since its debut, it’s become a staple for Champaign-Urbana area Christmas lights fans and always appears in our guide to amazing lights.
The display will be visible after dark, although it will look a little bit different than it does at Christmastime.
“We will have a big heart with lights in the roof and lights on characters so they can be seen at night,” she said.
The house at 206 N. Spruce Dr. in Mahomet boasts more than 25 wooden, life-size superheroes that Joe Dodge drew, cut and painted himself. In subsequent years he has added to the superhero crew, which includes the like of the Hulk, Iron Man, Spiderman, the Flash and many others.
Elisa said her husband, who is a semi driver, is still out driving and working. The family is adjusting to schooling at home.

“It’s so awesome. Our kids are going to flip,” said one neighbor.
