If you are looking to dispose of an old TV, your options are limited in the Champaign-Urbana area.
As you likely know by now, as of January 2012 it is illegal to put many types of electronic items in the garbage. Local waste haulers no longer accept these 17 categories of electronics.
Recycling electronics is the best option (and the legal one) but finding resources in the Champaign-Urbana area is getting more difficult, especially if you need to recycle televisions or cathode ray tube monitors. (This article explains the reasons; in short, the leaded glass in CRTs is an issue along with the decreased value of the commodities within the sets.) The latest blow was Best Buy’s decision not to accept TV or monitor drop-offs at any of its Illinois stores. Best Buy (2117 N. Prospect Ave., Champaign) will recycle your old TV if you purchase a 55-inch TV or larger from them and have it delivered to your home.
Currently, local options for recycling televisions or cathode ray-tube (tube monitors) are limited. The best option — and a cost-free one — remains the county-wide electronics collections held at Parkland College (most recent event announced here). The county will take TVs for free, provided they are not broken-glass CRTs.
Goodwill (912 W. Anthony Dr., Champaign; 1201 Savoy Plaza Lane, Savoy) will only accept only flat-panel monitor HDTVs but does accept some other electronics.
