What we’re looking forward to in September around Champaign-Urbana
Put some extra money in your family’s budget by becoming a consignor with One Week Boutique, the area’s largest pop-up baby/children’s consignment event. Consigning with OWB gets you more money, more room in your house and helps keeps clothes out of the landfill, to boot! If you missed our Facebook chat about consigning, check out all the expertise shared here. Public shopping at OWB starts on Sept. 19.
Frankly, if you’re a cheese lover, we’re not sure how you could possibly resist this one. There’s a free cheese giveaway each day, cheese contests, kids’ games, live entertainment and quite a bit more.
Annual Labor Day Celebration, Sept. 7
It is colloquially known as the Candy Parade — and if you’ve ever attended, you immediately understand why it earned that nickname. Sponsored by the AFL-CIO of Champaign County, the parade begins at 10 a.m. and kicks off a day of family fun.
45th Annual Broom Corn Festival, Sept. 11-13
Arcola celebrates its heritage as the “Broom Corn Capital of the World” with a weekend of fun activities. If you’re on the parade circuit, there’s another dandy one here, too, with the Lawn Rangers being an annual highlight. If you’ve never been to the Broom Corn Festival, we highly recommend it.
Ellnora 2015: Squonk’s Pneumatica, Sept. 11-12
Ellnora is Krannert Center’s guitar festival and it features a large variety of fascinating music and performers. Squonk’s Pneumatica is described as “an air-powered, punk-infused assault on the senses that’s part street theatre and all out family fun. Built in and around a 40-foot, steam-breathing statue with accordion lungs, Pneumatica fuses funky inflatables, zebra-striped bagpipes and rocking guitars into a musical happening “about air, made by air, powered by air.” And it’s free.
Pride Fest and Parade, Sept. 19
The sixth annual event in Champaign includes a parade and a Chambanamoms-sponsored kids area that includes children’s entertainment, bounce houses and carnival games.
Come dressed as your favorite character for the Make-A-Wish® Illinois Walk & Run for Wishes at Champaign’s Hessel Park. Individuals and teams can participate and raise funds to make wishes come true for local children with life-threatening medical conditions. The event includes a 5K fun run and 1-mile fun walk.
Prairieland Feeds Pet Fair Extravaganza, Sept. 19-20
The Savoy store’s annual event includes many live animal exhibits — the tiger is always a highlight — and plenty of fun for the kids. It’s the 25th annual event, and Prairieland Feeds is celebrating with its “biggest ever” event. We can’t wait!
Punkin Chunkin Festival, Sept. 26
Champaign’s Hessel Park is the site of the Champaign Park District’s kid-friendly event, featuring live music, food, crafts, games, a maze and plenty more.
Race Against Racism 5K, Sept. 27
The YWCA sponsors an annual 5K run and walk to support social change. It happens in a beautiful spot — the University of Illinois Arboretum — and anyone over the age of 10 can participate.
Lunar Eclipse Party, Sept. 27
Come see a total lunar eclipse at the Staerkel Planetarium. It’s free. Let’s hope there are no clouds. The main eclipse begins just after 8 p.m.
