What we’re looking forward to in June around Champaign-Urbana

School’s out (or almost out), and summer’s here! June heats up — literally and figuratively — with PLENTY to do around here. So to keep it all straight, we’ve picked out a few of our many favorites and listed them here so you will make sure not to miss them. They’re listed chronologically where possible.

This free event, sponsored by Visit Champaign County and the Champaign County Farm Bureau, gives participants a chance to get an up-close, interactive look at a variety of Champaign County farms. Girls Night Out: Foot Golf, June 4
Can’t beat this combination: Food, wine, prizes and good company. Did we mention it’s free? You’ll need to register here, but the only other obligation is to have a great time.
Kids Fishing Derby, June 6
Champaign’s Kaufman Lake is the site for a free chance to earn prizes (while getting a free hot dog lunch!). Bring your own tackle; bait will be provided.
Summer Playdate, June 10
The first of our six summer playdates takes place at the University of Illinois Ice Arena. Yes, you can skate for free! That’s not a misprint. The arena’s ice will be in place this summer, so take advantage!
Outside at Research Park, June 12
Another freebie! Bring your dinner (or purchase some dandy food at the park) and enjoy the concert featuring Della Mae, Bluegrass, and opening act Tara Terra, which takes the stage at 6:30 p.m. on the University of Illinois campus.
Sprouts at the Market, June 20
Kids ages 3-8 get their monthly chance for interactive learning at Urbana’s Market at the Square. Today’s topic: Get your heart ‘beeting’ with Sprouts.
Strawberry Jam, June 20
Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and some chairs and settle in for an afternoon of family fun. This annual favorite event features free ice cream, strawberries, music, and hayrack rides around picturesque Meadowbrook Park. Live folk music seals the deal.
Juneteenth Celebration, June 20
Celebrate the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the abolition of slavery in the U.S. Learn more about the history of Juneteenth and also enjoy music, food trucks, a President Lincoln impersonator, arts and crafts, and a bounce house.

If you’ve never been to Champaign’s Porter Park, this is a perfect chance to check out one of the city’s gems. Join us from 10 a.m. to noon for a morning of free fun, courtesy of Christie Clinic and the Champaign Park District.
Tolono Fun Days, June 26-27
The festivities begin on Friday but the fun really hits high gear on Saturday, including a ceremony to honor military veterans at West Side Park, a breakfast in downtown Tolono in the Masonic Hall, a parade at East Side Park and then the celebration commences at 11 a.m. with kids activities, games, music, inflatables, fireworks and more.
