The Savoy Fire Department invites the public to its annual Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the fire station, 106 W. Tomaras Ave. in Savoy.

Throughout the free event, people of all ages are encouraged to tour the fire station, experience fire department equipment and vehicles, meet local first responders, try on gear and learn important fire safety and prevention lessons.

Kids’ inflatables, an obstacle course and a raffle will add to the family-fun atmosphere. Food truck vendors will also be on site, including Burrito King and Kona Ice.

“Preventing fires requires participation from everyone in our community,” said Fire Chief Sam Smith. “We’re grateful for the sponsors who have stepped forward this year to help make it a fun and welcoming environment to learn about the fire department and fire safety.”

The Savoy Fire Department thanks the sponsors that make this event possible: Accolade Healthcare of Savoy, Kyle’s Corner, Kleiss Customs, Longview Bank, Savoy 16, Schnucks, Smoky’s House BBQ and The Villas of Holly Brook.

Fire Prevention Week is celebrated throughout North America every October, and it is the oldest U.S. public health observance on record, according to the National Fire Protection Association. For more than 100 years, Fire Prevention Week has worked to educate people about the risk of home fires and ways to minimize them.
