Your jack-o’-lantern has one more job.
A pumpkin tossed in the trash doesn’t quietly disappear. In a landfill it rots and releases methane. Composted, it goes back into the soil. And since Illinois grows more pumpkins than any other state, a lot of them land in the trash every November.
Join in on Sunday 11/8, 1-3pm, for Pumpkin Smashing at the farm. Round up pumpkins from your porch, your neighbors, your classroom, or your office and bring them out. They’ll have extra pumpkins on site too, so everyone gets a turn. Smashing is optional, you can drop off pumpkins to be composted.
Before you come, please remove candles, wax, ribbons, paint, and any other decorations. Plain pumpkins only, since they’re headed to the goats and the compost pile.
