In celebration of Grandparents’ Day — always the second Sunday in September — there are some great low-cost events happening in Champaign-Urbana and beyond.

Nearby Event Especially For Grandparents Day
Grandparents Day at Scovill Zoo, Decatur

More Events This Weekend
While not necessarily “Grandparents Day” events, we have selected a few more events to consider.
Weekend Train Rides at Monticello Railway Museum
Sept. 12-13
Board the train at the Nelson Crossing Depot (the main museum site) or at the Wabash Depot in downtown Monticello. The train ride lasts approximately one hour, however, passengers may choose to lay over at either depot. Walk through the museum cars and view many pieces of rolling stock at the museum site, as well as visit the museum’s gift shop. The Wabash Depot is within walking distance to many shops and restaurants around Monticello’s Courthouse Square. Visit the event for schedule info.
Fall festivals – take your pick!
There are so many fall festivals happening in and near Champaign-Urbana this weekend. The Arcola Broomcorn Festival would be a great pick, and closer to home we have West Side Arts, El Grito, Mum Fest and more. Don’t forget there are Oktoberfest events happening, too, which may be a hit with grandparents.

If the above events don’t fit the schedule, we have more ideas to peruse. Whether it’s a visit to Curtis Orchard (a favorite with our kids’ grandmother) or a drive to Amish Country, there is something for every taste.
