The Basics: Tips and Tricks for a campus tour, and what to see that is NOT on the tour
You’ve signed up for the official University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign student tour. Congrats! If you are on the admitted student tour or the prospective student tour, note that the actual time spent walking around on campus is only about 90 minutes. While it gives you a taste for campus life, it is by no means comprehensive of what the campus looks like or what you might experience there. That’s not a dig on our friends at admissions, that’s just a fact! The University of Illinois campus is HUGE. And there’s so much to do there.
Some top campus spots to visit, even if you are short on time, that won’t be covered by any of the “official” tours:
1) Like coffee? Get a feel for a quintessential campus cafe to grab the hot or cold drink of your choice. We recommend either Caffe Paradiso (where President Obama once stopped!) or Espresso Royale on Oregon. We picked these two because they are not far from the Alice Campbell Alumni Center where the official tours begin, but there’s plenty more options.
2) Go to the Illini Union Bookstore to grab Illini merch and take home a souvenir. Hard to beat the selection here. Fun fact: the Illini Union Bookstore is not in the Illini Union. It’s located at the corner of Wright Street and Daniel; not far away from the Alma Mater statue. Metered parking available.
3) Check out the ARC, otherwise known as the main campus fitness facility. While the general tours cover dorms and the dining halls, many students want to see where they can work out. Passes are available for campus visitors to take a self-guided tour around the ARC at no cost. There is metered parking next to the ARC.
4) Don’t want to deal with moving your car after you’ve parked on central campus? Take the bus. In the campus footprint, anyone can get on a Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District bus without showing an ID or paying a fare. And it’s very convenient. Use the MTD trip planner online, or ask the friendly drivers. Bonus: it’s a great way to see a lot of campus without having to dodge students or worry about one-way streets. Many of the routes go in a loop, so you can ride as you please.

Where to Eat in Champaign-Urbana during your campus visit
Let’s face it, one of the best ways to get insights into a campus is to check out the dining scene. One immediate observation many people make is how many Asian food options are available. It’s not just the volume; it’s the incredible variety — from all over the continent. And the quality Chinese food even attracted a New York Times article in summer 2025 (get the lowdown from our friends at Smile Politely). What many people overlook is that we have many homegrown, local places in addition to some typical chains.
Campus: We have a list of many of our favorite places to eat on campus, which features a variety of options, most of which we would define as fast casual. From Middle Eastern to salad, desserts to coffee, sandwiches to pizza, there’s literally something for everyone.
Outside of campus: Downtown Champaign is known for its cluster of food destinations, most of them being sit-down, full-service restaurants. We detail some of them in our list of date night restaurants. Metered parking is available.
A few other destinations that aren’t downtown, but relatively close to campus (and have free parking):
– The Indian lunch buffet at the newly opened Sang Eats has received rave reviews. (Champaign)
– For fresh yet quick Mexican food, you can’t beat Maize on South Neil.
– Harvest Market is so much more than a grocery store. Its options include one of the area’s best salad bars and some of our favorite sushi. (Champaign)
– The Yard on Broadway food hall in Urbana is a fun place to go, especially if your family can’t agree on just one food. This is especially good if you have littler siblings with you.
– Grab breakfast/brunch/lunch — we love the ginormous pancake — at Lazy Daisy Diner at Lincoln Square in Urbana.

What to do with your student in Champaign-Urbana during your campus visit
We have a whole website filled with things to do here. Of course, visiting campus is the No. 1 attraction. Now we’re here to tell you about some of our favorite places to go outside of campus.
1) Get outdoors. Most people see the miles and miles of cornfields on the way (no matter how you get here!) and don’t realize how much green space we have. Whether you stay in town and go for a walk, or you head out to any of our hiking trails, most people are very surprised by our natural spaces.
2) If you want to explore some authentically Central Illinois spaces. A working goat dairy? A legendary pumpkin patch and apple orchard? A chance to kiss a reindeer? We have so many options.
3) For some indoor fun, head to Parcadia – an immersive medieval-themed indoor minigolf course. You have to see it to believe it. And if you like escape rooms, next door is the highly rated Champaign-Urbana Adventures in Time and Space. This is across the street from The Yard food hall, FYI.
Things to do in Champaign-Urbana WITHOUT your Student
Whether your student is visiting or has already been admitted, there may be some events they want to go to alone. Take advantage of these times to get to explore more of Champaign-Urbana and enjoy experiences that your young adult may not find quite as compelling. If this is an “adults” only group, here are some places we recommend. (Most of these places are family-friendly and could be of interest to teens, too!)
1) Here’s my description of a perfect afternoon in downtown Champaign: reading a book and drinking coffee at The Literary; shopping at Village Roots Fair Trade, Needful Things and Circles; getting a matcha cream puff from Suzu’s Bakery; candle making at Fire Doll Studio; happy hour drinks at Punch.
2) Riggs Beer Company: Yes, even the beer is made out of corn here. Riggs Beer Company has created something special in its location on the edge of Urbana. A destination for beer drinkers that’s casual and inviting, this is a great place to hang out and relax. Note – closed Monday – Wednesday.
3) Allerton Park and Retreat Center: This destination is about 25 minutes away from campus, and it feels like a world away. Step into the estate’s manicured gardens, hang out in the magnificent English-inspired mansion, or take a class.

How to get to Champaign-Urbana, where to park, and other transportation considerations
If you’re out of town, you might want to fly into our very convenient airport, Willard. American Airlines operates flights to both Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth via American Airlines; . Car rentals are available; or you can skip the car, stay on or near campus.
If you’d rather be without a car for your visit – which is absolutely achievable thanks to CUMTD – there are many ways to travel. Amtrak makes two trips a day to Champaign from Chicago’s Union Station. Peoria Charter operates buses between Chicago’s airports/downtown and campus. Both the trains and buses have wifi, so you can sit back and relax with a movie or do some work.
If you’re within driving distance and plan to road trip to campus, that means your car will need a place to stay.
Parking: College campus parking can be a challenge no matter the location. The reality is there is plenty of parking in Champaign-Urbana – depending on the date, location and time of your visit. Metered parking is plentiful and reasonably priced; download the MobileMeter app in advance as many spots don’t have actual meters anymore. Some metered parking is free on Saturday; all metered parking is free on Sundays. Some campus lots are free on the weekend, others have 24-hour enforcement. Read the signs! If you plan ahead and are staying in the Champaign university district overnight, you can also get a 1-4 day permit. Read about the Champaign city parking options here. Planning ahead is the key.
Outside of campus and the downtown areas, parking is freely available. Remember: Urbana, Champaign, and the campus district have different pricing and hours.
Where to Stay in Champaign-Urbana on a University of Illinois College Visit
Don’t worry about finding a place to lay your head in Champaign-Urbana – we have plenty of hotels. If you want to stay in the heart of the action, your two options are the Illini Union hotel — which is a unique experience — and the Marriott Town Center on Green Street. Wake up with a view of the Quad? Sign me up for a stay at the Illini Union hotel. It will sell out quickly for dates like home football games, Mom’s Weekend and Graduation. (And yes, it’s actually located in the Illini Union.)
Also on campus, but further afield, is the iHotel. For an upscale experience with excellent service, the iHotel can’t be beat. In good weather, we love eating on the patio at Houlihan’s. Free parking is available; and if you don’t want to move the car, you can get right on the MTD bus to core campus. (Tell Sam chambanamoms.com sent you.)
There are many other hotels on the fringe of campus including the Hilton Garden Inn, Home 2, and Holiday Inn. If you are visiting the College of Engineering, you might pick to stay at the Hampton Inn on University Avenue.
For an adventure that involves an English Manor on a gorgeous estate with trails and art and gardens galore, book an overnight stay at Allerton Park and Retreat Center. Only downside? It’s 30 minutes away from campus, just outside Monticello – a lovely small town.
