University of Illinois’ Vet Med Open House invites the public to meet and interact with vet students and animals alike

An annual Champaign-Urbana family tradition, Vet Med Open House is an event unlike any other. Want to stick your arm inside the stomach of a fistulated cow? How about witness dog obedience training in action? Snakes, spiders, and other creepy crawlies? What about a walk through a real laboratory? There’s something for everyone, with animals big and small.

There’s no place like Vet Med … for limitless opportunities in careers from animal care to public health to biomedical research.

- The Open House is Sunday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana. This year’s theme is “Night at the Museum.” Booths will take on a museum-like feel as booth leaders compete for prizes with their most creative ideas.

- Thousands of people flock to this event each year.

No tickets are required for this event. Simply show up and enjoy the event at your own pace. Be prepared for a fair amount of walking and map out your plan ahead of time if there is an exhibit you do not want to miss.

WHAT CAN YOU SEE AND DO AT VET MED OPEN HOUSE?
The annual Open House of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine will transport you to a whirlwind of family-friendly activities, educational exhibits, and fascinating demonstrations.
Open House features informative booths and exhibits throughout the veterinary campus, including in the Large Animal Clinic, the Basic Sciences Building, and the Clinical Skills Learning Center. Most booths are open throughout the day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please check the program at the Welcome Booth when you arrive.
Parking is free, and there are refreshments and meals available for purchase, as are veterinary-themed shirts and other apparel.
Families will find plenty to keep youngsters engaged. The Kids’ Tent will return — including crafts tied to this year’s theme — and children can also take part in a bingo-style scavenger hunt that guides them through the exhibits, ending with a prize.
