Where to see the Marching Illini in Champaign-Urbana — not just at football games
Hey Champaign-Urbana, we have a confession to make: we are OBSESSED with the Marching Illini. We’re proud to say that we might even be considered Marching Illini groupies.
We know that one of the best places to see the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign marching band in action is at a football game, during the traditional pregame, halftime and postgame performances. But we’re here to tell you that the Marching Illini transcend the Memorial Stadium football field.

2025 will once again see the Marching Illini at State Farm Center for a featured performance
Marching Illini fans should mark their calendars now for the Marching Illini Concert, happening Sept. 28 at State Farm Center. This is the third consecutive year the Marching Illini have held this grand event, known to diehard fans as the band’s “time to shine.” This year’s performance takes place during Homecoming Weekend.
The Marching Illini will perform (without marching) at 3 p.m. Fans can even expect a “grand entrance” from Marching Illini director Barry Houser. Tickets will go on sale Aug. 22 with prices ranging from $17.50-$44.50 plus fees.

Beyond the concert, here are some more ways to see the Marching Illini (MI) in action, as the band celebrates its 157th season this year.

1) Did you know? You can watch the Marching Illini practice.
The Marching Illini rehearse Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday from 5-6 or 6:30 p.m. The Marching Illini practice field is on the corner of First and Gregory in Champaign. If it rains the rehearsal typically continues outdoors, but in the event of lightning, they will return to the band building. Best part: it’s free. They also practice Thursday nights from 8-9:30 p.m. generally in Memorial Stadium.
2) The Marching Illini host an annual marching band championship, with high school bands from all over the state.
This year it will be Oct. 25. Have the marching band day of your life! It’s a full day of performances, including two exhibitions by the MI. Admission is charged, but kids 5 and under are free. Last year, Monticello High School, Mahomet-Seymour High School, and Champaign Central were among the local bands competing.
3) The Marching Illini sometimes visit a C-U high school.
The annual C-U Marching Showcase is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at Centennial High School. This community marching band event is expected to bring together the Urbana High School Tiger Marching Band, the Champaign Central Marching Maroons, and the Champaign Centennial Marching Chargers. Last year, the Marching Illini were featured in the evening’s final performance. (TBA if they will appear this year.)
Admission is free, however donations will be accepted. All donations will support the band programs at the three high schools.
4) You don’t have to go into the game to see the Marching Illini on game day.
Don’t have tickets? Can’t stay for the game? Just head to Grange Grove, the tailgate area right in front of Memorial Stadium, about 2.5 hours before game time, for a short concert. If you don’t want to go to Grange Grove, about 45 minutes before game time the band parades out of the Armory as it marches to Memorial Stadium. (On game weekends, the MI may also do an official “march out” from the Armory to their Friday rehearsal.) Keep an eye on the Marching Illini Facebook page where the exact game day schedule is posted.
5) If you go to the game to see the Marching Illini, be prepared to go early and stay late.
Everyone knows that the Marching Illini perform at halftime. But they also play on the field before the game (pregame performance) and do a short postgame. After the game, they march back to the College of Education where they conclude the day with musical highlights of that game’s show performed on the steps. (For a night game, that concert sometimes gets cancelled.) Again, check the game day schedule.
6) Are you a night owl?
Check out Friday Night Hype at the Alma Mater, corner of Wright and Green. Generally around 10 p.m. Friday nights before Saturday home games.
7) Don’t like to be outdoors?
The Marching Illini typically perform an indoor concert (see above), which means no shivering outside or waiting in the rain. This year’s concert is scheduled for Sept. 28 at the State Farm Center. Also keep an eye on the 2025 Homecoming schedule for any MI participation in concert events.
