The Wedding Singer at Parkland College: The Perfect Parents Night Out

April 24, 2025 By From The Editors

By Adsen Tarr

Looking for a night filled with theater, glitter and ’80s nostalgia? Have we got the show for you! No matter if you are looking for a date night, a moms’ night out, or a fun outing with your theater loving teen, The Wedding Singer at Parkland College is an exciting excursion to end your week. Between the guitar riffs, upbeat dance numbers and heartwarming storyline, you are sure to enjoy this incredible show.

The Plot (No Spoilers, Promise!)

Based on the popular film starring Adam Sandler, The Wedding Singer is set in 1985 and follows the story of Robbie Hart, (played by Jake Fava) a wedding singer in New Jersey until he gets his heart broken while standing at the altar. Chaos ensues, in the form of high kicks, flashy dance numbers and heartfelt songs.

Standout Performances

Jake Fava as Robbie Hart and Kirby Toalson as his love interest Julia are both wonderful vocalists and have lovely chemistry and banter onstage.
Anna Mettes shines as Holly, the wild and crazy waitress and friend to Julia. Her dancing in the act one finale was phenomenal.
Honorable mentions go to Diane Pritchard in the role of Rosie, Robbie’s rapping grandmother. She was absolutely a crowd favorite.

Production Highlights

Not only were the actors onstage absolutely incredible but the production elements really stole the show. First and foremost I cannot say enough good things about Michel Stien’s incredible wigs! Hair was such a big part of the ’80’s and they really tied the whole show together.

Another effect that really helped draw the audience into the world of the story is the lighting design. It completely transformed the stage — going far beyond your typical stage lighting. There were lights on the stairs and curtains that were put to good use in big ensemble numbers and even a disco ball that sent light shimmering throughout the theatre. The sets and moving elements onstage were amazing and their use of stage space was unlike anything I’ve seen done before. The stage was almost unrecognizable!

Whitney Havice’s choreography really completed the high-energy, fun-loving atmosphere. It was so exciting to watch and really played to the strengths of the dancers. Overall, it was an absolutely excellent show and the production elements only enhanced the magic that was created on the stage.

Is This a Moms-Night-Out or Family Night?

This one leans Moms-Night-Out or Teen Date Night; due to some adult language and themes, it’s best suited for older teens and adults. That said, if your teen loves musicals, and you aren’t worried about the mature themes, this show has all the ingredients of a fun bonding night: humor, catchy songs, and plenty of heart. I did see a family with younger children at the show on opening night as well, a 9-year-old and she really enjoyed it! She said her favorite part was when the leading man fell into the dumpster. All that to say, if you do bring an elementary school kid, most of the inappropriate jokes and ’80s references will go over their heads and they’d have fun just the same. However they are certainly not the target audience for the show experience.

I attended opening night and when I arrived at 7 p.m. the parking lot already had a significant amount of cars. The tickets are general admission and doors open around 7 p.m. Seating is first come first serve, but there really isn’t a bad seat in the house. The show’s run time is 2 hours and 30 minutes including the 15-minute intermission.

Final Thoughts

Whether you lived through the ’80s or just enjoy the nostalgia of it all, The Wedding Singer is a joyful, and excellent night of theatre. Don’t wait to snag your tickets — this cast will impress you and sweep you into a fun escape from your week!
