Riddle me this, Batman: What’s better than having a nice bowl of ice cream to finish off dinner?
Having it for breakfast! (Insert maniacal laugh.)
If consuming ice cream is your bent, Feb. 1 is your day. It’s National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, and Champaign-Urbana area businesses certainly know how to celebrate.

The informal holiday is commemorated annually on the first Saturday in February, weather be damned. Here’s a rundown of places that are offering specials for the big day (please let us know any we’ve missed at editor@chambanamoms.com):
- Sidney Dairy Barn, which is normally closed this time of year, is opening for one day on Feb. 1 to give you a chance to snap up your favorites. “We will have vanilla and chocolate ice cream, of course, and maybe a few specials as well,” SDB noted in a Facebook post. The Barn will be open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. while supplies last.
- The Champaign Park District will celebrate the holiday at Martens Center. Kids of all ages are invited to enjoy a fun morning with ice cream and toppings. Free! No registration needed. From 10 a.m.-noon.
- All four of The Main Scoop’s locations — Mahomet, Monticello, Urbana and Rantoul — will be opening early to allow ice cream denizens to get their fill. Each shop opens at 8 a.m. and, according to its Facebook post, The Main Scoop will “team up” with Savoy’s Industrial Donuts for the occasion.
