Parkland Theatre’s White Christmas is a festive treat for all ages
Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is on stage at Parkland Theatre through Dec. 15
There is no shortage of family-friendly holiday entertainment in Champaign-Urbana — if anyone knows that, it’s us. Just take a look at our bursting-at-the-seams calendar! If you’re looking for another way to celebrate the season, be sure to add Parkland Theatre’s current mainstage production to your list. Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is a stage adaptation of the eponymous movie musical, presented here in Champaign-Urbana complete with a live full orchestra, fabulous dancing, and the high level of local theatrical talent we’ve all come to expect and enjoy.

Directed by Chelsea Collier, White Christmas is a two-act musical with all the classic favorites audiences know from the movie (“Sisters,” “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep,” and of course “White Christmas,” to name a few). A few tweaks to the screenplay give the story new life on stage, but by and large, this is the holiday favorite that graces so many television screens this time of year. Seeing it on stage is a joyful excuse to gather the family and get gussied up for a night on the town.
Theatre-goers will notice the orchestra first upon entering the Miner Theatre. Musicians fill the floor pit and the stage wings, which have been adapted as alcoves for percussion and brass. It adds to the grandness of the event, which continues beyond the talented orchestra.
The set, designed by Molly Ilten, provides a striking canvas on which the actors, singers, and dancers can create their art. Leading the talented cast are Bryan Goode and Jacob Deters as Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, alongside Abby Gailey and Emily Hogan as sisters Betty and Judy Haynes. Those who find themselves frequenting the local theatre scene will recognize the leading men and women, plus many of the faces in the supporting cast and ensemble. Did we mention how much talent there is in Central Illinois theatre?!
This show is rated “Family,” making it perfect for the kids and grown-ups. Parents of littles will want to take note — the evening shows start at 7:30 p.m. and runs until a little after 10 p.m., with one intermission, so be prepared for a late night.
