Where to shop for groceries in Champaign-Urbana, along with shopping tips and ‘best kept secrets’

We have a multitude of grocery stores to choose from in Champaign-Urbana, ranging from nationwide chains to the very definition of “local” where no more than half a dozen shoppers can fit in the store at one time. We break down where you can grocery shop and include a few tips on navigating Champaign-Urbana grocery shopping for you.

Champaign-Urbana grocery stores

There are plenty of places to shop local for groceries — produce, meats, and non-perishables. Some of these are speciality stores or ethnic; others are more general. (We have a list dedicated to specialty and ethnic grocery stores in addition to this list.) We have included links to Facebook pages, where possible.


Aldi, all locations (Champaign, Urbana, Savoy)

Daily hours: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. (Urbana) and 8:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. (Champaign and Savoy)
Delivery available: Via Instacart; you can also place an Instacart order and drive to Aldi to pick it up curbside

Art Mart

Art Mart, Champaign

Daily Hours: 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday – Saturday; 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday
Why shop local? Prepared deli options, fine cheeses, groceries, wine, beer, salads, sandwiches, bread, whole bean coffee and other kitchen essentials.

Common Ground Food Co-op, Urbana

Daily hours: 7:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Curbside hours: Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Why shop local? The Co-Op has a great selection of produce in addition to non-perishable items, and meats, dairy, frozen goods, and home goods. Phone ordering with same-day curbside pickup is available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

Costco, Champaign

Daily hours: 10 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday.

County Market, multiple locations

Daily hours: Hours vary by location
County Market has stores in Champaign, Urbana, Gibson City and Monticello, just to name a few.

Daily hours: 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. daily (but may vary by location)
Dollar General has you covered with pool noodles to school supplies, paper products to basic groceries (particularly shelf-stable ones).

Fresh produce stocked at Harvest Market in Champaign

Harvest Market, Champaign

Daily hours: 6 a.m. – 10 p.m.
Delivery: Available here
Sometimes compared to our own version of Whole Foods, in Harvest Market you can enjoy time in the Farmhouse Restaurant or shop the extensive deli or seafood counters. That’s in addition to all of your regular grocery shopping. You’ll find many local vendors with products on Harvest Market’s shelves.

Meijer, Champaign and Urbana locations

Daily hours: 6 a.m. – midnight
Delivery: Available via Shipt. Curbside pickup also available.
A classic Champaign-Urbana grocery option, Meijer is one of the larger grocery stores in C-U. There are two options, one on North Prospect and another in Southeast Urbana, so wherever you are in town, there’s one near you.

Old Time Meat and Deli, Champaign (Neil Street)

Daily hours: Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday – Saturday, closed Sunday.
Why shop local?
Quality meats can be challenging to find. Old Time Meat and Deli is well-stocked with most items; it sells beef, chicken, pork, fish and deli meats.


Ruler Foods, Champaign and Urbana

Daily hours: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., until further notice


Salt & Light, Champaign and Urbana

Daily hours: Monday – Saturday, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. (Champaign) and Monday – Saturday, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., Sunday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Urbana)
Why shop local? Many people don’t realize this is a grocery store. Produce, frozen goods, and more. Profits stay local and help those in need. Anyone can shop at Salt & Light.


Sam’s Club, Champaign

Hours: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sunday
Delivery: Via Instacart


Schnucks (Champaign, Urbana, Savoy, Mahomet locations)

Daily hours: 6 a.m. – 1o p.m.

Strawberry Fields Natural Food Store and World Harvest, Urbana

Daily hours: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sunday
Why shop local? It stocks natural and organic groceries, frozen and refrigerated, fresh baked bread and pastries, made fresh daily salads and sandwiches gourmet coffee and teas, local and organic produce, vitamins and supplements, and products for home and body.

  • Annapoorna, Champaign: Locally owned Indian grocery store.
  • Far East on Fifth Street, Champaign: An Asian grocery store with plenty of fresh produce. Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian foods and more.
  • El Progreso Tienda y Carniceria, Urbana: Mexican food store and delights with fresh meats, cheeses, beans, chiles and more.
  • Cheese and Crackers, Champaign (Old Farm Shops): Deli sandwiches for take-out, cheese, salami and other meats, fresh fish delivered three times a week (email fish@crackerscheese.com for information), craft sodas, wine, and dry goods. Visit its website or call (615) 615-8531.
  • Direct from the farm: Looking for fresh eggs, meat, or veggies? Many farms are in operation, offering pick up or delivery for orders placed directly through the farm. Find out about local farmers markets now. 
  • Fresh International Market: Describes itself as “from live seafood and fresh produce to Taiwanese bakery, Cantonese Deli, and more, we offer a wide range of grocery selection to all our customers.” A number of good finds here. Also on Facebook and Instagram.
  • Green Onion Asian Market, Champaign: Korean Grocery Store
  • Prairie Fruits Farm: Get goat cheese, crackers and more.
