Ask the Doctor: How to Maintain Breast Health

October 3, 2023 By From The Editors

By Christine Lusby, Christie Clinic Department of OB/GYN

Breast health is a critical component of overall well-being, and one of the simplest yet most powerful tools for early detection of breast abnormalities is the self-breast exam (SBE). This proactive practice empowers you to take charge of your health and plays a pivotal role in early breast cancer detection, potentially saving lives.

  • Early Detection Saves Lives: Early detection is often the key to successful breast cancer treatment. Self-breast exams provide an opportunity to identify abnormalities promptly, which can lead to early intervention and improved outcomes.
  • Familiarity with Your Body: Performing regular self-breast exams fosters familiarity with your own body. You become attuned to the normal look and feel of your breast tissue, making it easier to detect any changes or abnormalities. Early detection relies on recognizing what is unusual or different.
  • Monthly Routine: SBEs can be incorporated into a monthly routine, typically about a week after menstruation when breast tissue is less tender. This consistency allows you to monitor your breast health over time and identify any changes promptly.
  • Complement to Clinical Exams: While clinical breast exams by healthcare professionals are essential, they may occur only annually or less frequently. SBEs provide a means of ongoing monitoring between these appointments, ensuring that any potential issues are not overlooked.
  • Empowerment and Peace of Mind: Performing self-breast exams empowers you to actively participate in your health. It gives you a sense of control and responsibility over your well-being, leading to peace of mind and reduced anxiety about breast health.
  • Detecting Various Abnormalities: Self-breast exams are not only for identifying lumps or masses but also for detecting other changes like skin dimpling, nipple discharge, or changes in breast shape or size. These signs can indicate various breast conditions, including cancer.
  • Education and Awareness: Engaging in self-breast exams encourages education and awareness about breast health. Learning how to perform an effective SBE and understanding breast changes can lead to a proactive approach to overall health.
  • Prompt Action: If you detect any changes during a self-breast exam, it motivates you to seek prompt medical attention. Catching potential issues early often means less invasive treatments and improved prognosis.

Self-breast exams are a fundamental aspect of proactive healthcare. They empower you to monitor your breast health, recognize changes, and seek timely medical advice when needed. While SBEs are not a replacement for clinical exams or mammograms, they complement these screenings and play a significant role in early detection. By incorporating self-breast exams into your monthly routine, you can take a proactive step toward protecting your breast health and overall well-being.
