Ask the Doctor: Adjusting to Back to School

August 9, 2023 By From The Editors

By Dr. M. Louisa Maranon, Christie Clinic Department of Pediatrics

Adjusting to back-to-school time can be challenging for kids, especially after a long break from school. Back-to-school anxiety is common in kids and can be caused by a variety of factors, such as the fear of the unknown, academic pressures, and social interactions. Here are some strategies you can try to help your child adjust to back-to-school time:

Establish a regular routine: Set regular wake-up and bedtime schedules, and establish a routine for morning and evening activities. This will help your child adjust to the new schedule and establish a sense of normalcy.

Plan ahead: Help your child prepare for the upcoming school year by purchasing school supplies and getting organized. This can help reduce anxiety and stress about the new school year.

Talk about expectations: Have a conversation with your child about what they can expect during the school year, including academic expectations and social interactions. This can help your child feel more prepared and less anxious.

Practice new routines: Practice the new routines that your child will be following during the school year, such as waking up early, getting dressed, and preparing breakfast. This can help your child adjust to the new routine before the school year starts.

Visit the school: If possible, visit the school before the school year starts. This can help your child become more familiar with the school environment and feel more comfortable on the first day of school.

Encourage open communication: Encourage your child to talk about their feelings and concerns about the upcoming school year. This can help them feel more comfortable and supported during the transition.

By using these strategies, you can help your child cope with back-to-school anxiety and feel more prepared and confident for the new school year. It’s important to provide support and reassurance to your child during this transition period, and to encourage open communication and positive coping strategies.
