This winter weekend is full of options for indoor enjoyment as a family

Families can choose from a myriad of events and activities this weekend in Champaign-Urbana

Get ready because there are a number of options waiting for you this weekend in Champaign-Urbana when it comes to family fun! There are crafty things, sporty events, musical happenings and all kinds of STEM-related fun, too! Ready for more good news? Much of it is FREE! But you do want to plan ahead because there are some “registration required” events in this category of free family fun this weekend.

Carnaval! is a party celebrating the end of the holiday season before the introspection of Lent begins, culminating in Mardi Gras, French for “Fat Tuesday.” Lyric Theatre @ Illinois will celebrate with music and dance from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal—from operatic favorites to cabaret, musical theatre, salsa, tango, and more. Accompanied by the beauty of the Lyric Theatre Orchestra, the Latin Jazz Ensemble led by Tito Carrillo, and the Guitar Ensemble led by Guido Sanchez-Portugez, in Foellinger Great Hall, the company of Lyric Theatre @ Illinois will dazzle, delight, and entrance.

When: Tuesday, Feb. 21, 6 p.m. (party), 7:30 p.m. (concert)

Bring your Mardi Gras masks, dress up, and join the fun in the Krannert Center Lobby at 6 p.m. Enjoy an appetizer and a drink while trying your luck at the gaming tables and listening to performances by the U of I Latin American Ensemble and local Afro-Brazilian percussion group Bloco Gavião, then follow the parade of Marching Illini, acrobats, and cast into the Great Hall. Dessert will be served at intermission, and the guest who receives the special piece of cake will be crowned the Sovereign of Carnaval! Don’t miss the family-friendly fun.

Party starts at 6pm in the Lobby.
Concert follows at 7:30 p.m. in Foellinger Great Hall.

University of Illinois Campus Recreation Birthday Parties

U of I’s Campus Recreation has four unique experiences that are sure to be the talk of your youngster’s next celebration! Make a splash with a pool party at the CRCE indoor aquatic center, complete with heated leisure pool, waterslide, and bubble benches. Reach new heights with a rock climbing party at the ARC climbing wall — safety instruction and equipment included. Learn how nutrition can be fun and tasty by making personal pizzas and decorating cupcakes in the ARC instructional kitchen. Cool off with an ice skating party at the Ice Arena. All birthday party packages are available to members and non-members.

Party Packages are available at the ARC, the CRCE Aquatic Center, and the Ice Arena!

Materials Provided: Materials for the party are not included. Services included for each location are as follows:

• CRCE aquatic center: lifeguard on duty, private party area
• ARC climbing wall: party area adjacent to the wall, 2 instructors, climbing equipment
