We love our kids but who doesn’t need an adult night out on the town every once in a while to remind us that being a grownup can be fun!

Whether you’re looking for a date-night atmosphere or just a fun afternoon with friends, we’ve rounded up a list of the top places for adults to go in Champaign-Urbana in January.

Top Grownup Things to do in January in Champaign-Urbana

 

Thank you to Hatha Yoga & Fitness for presenting this month’s top things to do for adults.

Make plans to attend Hatha’s New Year Fitness Palooza from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Jan. 14. At this adults-only event, Hatha fitness instructors will guide you through multiple classes, including a HOT class! Balance, pilates, goal-setting, and more will be the focus of this unique and lively fitness experience. Open to ALL skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Whether you’re a Hatha member or a newbie to fitness, you are welcome at this event. Meet Hatha’s instructors, have some refreshments, and get a full-body workout.

New Year Fitness Palooza with Hatha Yoga and Fitness

Laugh Until You Scream! Stand-up Comedy Show: Spice up your Friday the 13th with a visit to historic Fischer Theatre in Danville for stand-up comedy to support Arts in the Park. Advance tickets are $15.

Illini hockey vs. McKendree: The Illini hockey team tackles McKendree University on Jan. 13-14 for one of its final home games of the season. Get your tickets early!

The Wilbur Mansion: In this lecture, Madison Story will describe the history of the mansion, the period when it was home to the Champaign County History Museum, and its role in Champaign County History. 7 p.m. on Jan. 19 in the Robeson Pavillion Room C of the Champaign Public Library.

Tom Petty Night at the Rose Bowl: Greg Klyma and the Great Wide Open hit the Rose Bowl Tavern in Urbana on Jan. 20 to show off their Tom Petty chops. Tickets are $10 in advance (no reserved seating).

Goths at the Planetarium: Narrated by Patrick Stewart of Star Trek fame, this Staerkel Planetarium program on Jan. 20 showcases the violent forces at work in our universe. Tickets are available at the door ($6 for adults).

Puzzles, Pretzels and Pints at Yellow & Co.: Join Yellow & Co. in Mahomet for a puzzle competition ($50 to the winners!) and pretzels from Lucky Moon. Teams of up to four will compete to see who can complete a 500-piece puzzle the fastest. Ages 16 and up on Jan. 21.

The French Dispatch: The Virginia Theatre presents the 2021 film The French Dispatch, Wes Anderson’s anthology about the contributors to the last issue of a prestigious magazine. At 7 p.m. on Jan. 25. General admission is $7.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis: One of the great jazz musicians of the modern era returns to Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 26. This much we know for sure: Based on his previous appearances in C-U, you will not be disappointed.

Champaign County Area Restaurant Week: The seventh-annual event is back in full force for 2023, so if you’re so inclined, hit your favorite restaurant — or try out a new spot — to enjoy some of the area’s finest food. Check out special menus for the week. Begins Jan. 27.

Knit at Nite at the Literary: If you’re tired of knitting alone, pack your needles and hit The Lit in Champaign to enjoy your favorite hobby with some like-minded folks. From 5-7 p.m. on the last Sunday of every month.
