Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin at Krannert Center: Rescheduled from October, this Jan. 25 show features the five-time Grammy winner Carpenter and four-time winner Colvin, who broke into stardom in the late 1980s and ’90s. Tickets are still available.
Chess Club at Champaign Public Library: Wanna play chess? A chess club for adults is meeting at the Champaign Public Library every other week (Jan. 14, Jan. 28). Free! Bring your own chess board if possible. Beginners welcome.
Passing at the Virginia Theatre: The 2021 film Passing is the latest entry in the Arthouse Experience Film Series at the Virginia on Jan. 19. The film is set in New York in the 1920s and features the story of a woman whose life is turned upside down when she connects with a former childhood friend who is passing as white.
ABBA Tribute Event at the Virginia: Mania: The ABBA Tribute hits the Virginia on Jan. 10, including all of your favorite ABBA hits like “Take a Chance on Me” and “Dancing Queen.” Get tickets for Mania: The ABBA Tribute here.
Phish Tribute at the Rose Bowl Tavern: Here’s another cool tribute event. Phish fans can journey to the Rose Bowl Tavern in Urbana on Jan. 13 for some Phish hits by Birds of a Feather. Tickets are $10.
MüV Collective Presents: Mini Class Sampler and One Year Anniversary Celebration: Join Chambanamoms at MüV Collective in Mahomet for a Mini Class Sampler & One Year Anniversary from 5:30-7 p.m. on Jan. 18. In honor of MüV Collective’s one year anniversary, it is celebrating with “mini classes” from all of its instructors, featuring 10 minute back-to-back samples of all of its class offerings. Ice Skating at University of Illinois Ice Arena: Did winter happen if you don’t ice skate at least once? Public skating is available from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Jan. 10 and 12, among other days, in January, and the best part is U of I students are still on break.
An Evening with Branford Marsalis: His brother Wynton has performed at Krannert Center before, and this time Branford makes the trip. The legendary jazz musician will be on saxophone with his band. Slated for Jan. 27.
