The gas station wasteland that is far southwest Champaign soon will be relieved of that status.
A Haymakers Convenience Store will be located at Carle at the Fields with a planned opening in early 2020. It will include gas and a car wash, similar to its first Champaign location at the Carriage Center development.
According to owner Niemann Foods, Haymakers will feature fresh sandwiches, three hot soups daily and a frozen yogurt/smoothie bar in addition to brewed teas, coffee, cappuccino and bottled beverages with a 32-flavor soda fountain.
Construction is expected to begin later this year.
Haymakers will be the first store that sells gas in that area. The closest gas station to the Fields is located at the corner of Duncan and Kirby, about 2.5 miles away.
It joins a burgeoning commercial district at the Fields, given recent announcements of new locations planned for Hickory River Smokehouse, Destihl and King Kuma.
