Flags have become powerful symbols of people, ideas, concepts, among many others. Whether representing a people, a person, a nation, a group, etc, flags can be an important symbol and rallying point for those who cherish and feel represented. Sometimes their history is recent, other times it goes back hundreds if not thousands of years.

Think about the flags you see, how often do you see them? In what contexts do you see them? Who do they represent? What purpose do they serve? These questions can be critical when thinking about the purpose flags serve, and why they are used and represented in certain ways.

Head to the Spurlock Museum this Flag Day, Sunday, June 14 to make or design a flag that speaks to you. Use the supplies that they provide to copy or design a flag that represents you or something important to you in some way. When you are done designing your flag, help yourself to some FREE FOOD provided by Mike’s BBQ.

About the Series

Spurlock Sundays are free, drop-in programs held on one Sunday of the month from 1:00 pm–3:00 pm. Programs are open to visitors of all ages and developed with youth and family in mind. Spurlock Sunday activities can take a multitude of forms, from crafts, games, performances, topical open-mic sharing, community conversations, and hands-on experiences with cultural artifacts.

Please remember that events may be canceled or rescheduled last minute due to unpredictable weather or other factors. We encourage you to reach out to event organizers before heading out to an event to verify it is still happening.
