Engineers of all ages are welcome to join us on April 18 for Saturday Engineering for Everyone, presented by the ECE Department at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. We’ll have bagels, coffee, and juice available before the presentation.

Overview:

Whether they are powering the fans in our homes, the cars on our roads, or giant processes in industry, electrical machines are the muscles of the modern world. This talk explores the journey of making these machines “ultra-efficient,” i.e., to do more work while using less energy. We will look at how clever new designs and high-tech materials, such as superconductors, allow us to build smaller, more powerful motors that waste less energy as heat. By rethinking how we build these machines, we can create a future with a cleaner environment and better technology that helps everyone, from students to scientists, protect our planet.

Speaker Bio:

Kiruba Haran is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He moved to Illinois after spending thirteen years at GE Research working on electrical machines for applications ranging from power generation to aviation. In Illinois, his work has focused on high-specific-power machines for electrified transportation and renewable energy. Kiruba is also Founder and CTO of Hinetics, Inc., based in the Research Park.

Please remember that events may be canceled or rescheduled last minute due to unpredictable weather or other factors. We encourage you to reach out to event organizers before heading out to an event to verify it is still happening.
