Anita Purves Nature Center
On June 3, 1979, the Anita Purves Nature Center opened to the public. This Monday, the public is invited to the Nature Center for a special 40th birthday party.
The celebration runs from 2 – 4 p.m., on Monday.
“The nature center has changed in appearance over the years, but our mission is unchanged. We want to facilitate and enhance people’s experience with nature. And, we want to make nature accessible to everyone,” said Judy Miller, Environmental Program Manager.
Urbana Park District recently installed solar power at the Nature Center, including a solar power learning station. The Park District will have a special ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday at 2:15pm to officially recognize the incorporation of solar at the center. “We are excited to reduce our carbon footprint and to give people a chance to learn about solar power,” Miller added.
People can enjoy cake and lemonade while learning all about the many services offered at the nature center while participating in a scavenger hunt. At 3pm visitors will meet one of the center’s Screech Owl during a presentation. Everyone will receive a small gift for attending the event.
The Nature Center is located at 1505 North Broadway in Urbana.
