Celebrate Worldwide Quilting Day with the Illini Country Stitchers and create a coaster or mug rug using fabric scraps.
In this drop-in program, join members of the Illini Country Stitchers and learn how to transform fabric scraps into colorful works of art. There’s a craft for all ages.
- For ages 5 – 8
- Fill a small, presewn, fabric bird with lentils and add a few embroidery stitches.
- For ages 9 – Adults
- Use collage scraps to make fabric and use big-stitch handstitching/sashiko in parallel rows to secure the collaged fabrics to make a colorful coaster/mug rug.
Since 1985, the Illini Country Stitchers have brought like-minded quilters together to share their skills, learn from nationally-known quilters, and to support philanthropic projects that include making quilts for Project Linus, which are given to children at local hospitals; making patriotic quilts for veterans through Quilts of Valor; working with Cunningham Children’s Home; and supporting Crisis Nursery. The group meets on the second and fourth Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 905 S. Russell Street in Champaign.
