Free Event Open to the Public
Come and have a look at magnificent astronomical objects through one of their many telescopes. This eventis open to all CUAS members, as well as members of the public. Children ages 10 and older are welcome if accompanied by an adult. If it’s clear, you will be able to see seasonal astronomical objects through one of their telescopes. Generally, they will use they 8″ Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope or they 22″Newtonian to show the moon, planets that may be visible in the early evening, and even a brighter deep-sky object like a star cluster or a galaxy. A 14″Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope may also be used.
There is no charge for thisevent, but will be cancelled if the weather is cloudy or otherwise inclement.
Please call 217-351-2567 before coming if there is any uncertainty about the weather. Unfortunately, they do not have public restroom facilities at the observatory.
To get to the observatory, take I-57 south to Exit 229, which is Monticello Road. Turn right onto Monticello Road and go 1½ miles West. Turn left onto County Road 700 E and proceed ½ mile south to th eobservatory, which is on the east side of the road.
Please remember that events may be canceled or rescheduled last minute due to unpredictable weather or other factors. We encourage you to reach out to event organizers before heading out to an event to verify it is still happening.
