One of the rites of spring in Champaign-Urbana will return in a modified fashion this April.
Babies and Brunch, an annual event that has allowed families the chance to check out the baby goats at Prairie Fruits Farm and combined it with a gourmet food and drink experience, will happen at the Champaign agritourism destination on Saturdays only in April.
In order to manage crowds and maintain COVID safety protocols, only 50 reservations will be allowed per hour.
It’s been a longtime tradition to check out the baby goats that arrive in springtime at Prairie Fruits Farm, the Champaign farm and cheesemaker that breeds and raises goats for their rich milk. Guests can see and interact with the youngest of “kids” — sometimes just days old — as well as their mamas.
In previous years, it’s been free to visit the farm during Babies and Brunch, and check out the baby goats in the barns. Specialty brunch food/drink items were available for purchase as supplies lasted, and were optional.
Due to efforts to keep both humans and animals safe and healthy, Prairie Fruits has pivoted to adapt a ticketed model for the 2021 season with just four dates: April 3, 10, 17, and 24.
The admission fee covers goat viewing and petting and a choice of either a sweet or savory “grab & go” food item. Food items will be prepared by a different vendor each week (bakeries from either Champaign-Urbana or Chicago).
Tickets cost $16 per person (for adults and children); children under 2 are free. Guests can buy tickets, with 50 tickets available each hour between 10 am and 1 pm.
Beverages will be available for additional purchase, including coffee drinks, goat milk hot chocolate and assorted cold beverages. The Prairie Fruits Farm store will be open for gelato, cheese and “assorted goodies.”
Prairie Fruits Farm has not yet announced its on-farm sales schedule for the 2021 season. In 2020, PFF opened its doors for on-farm sales during weekend afternoons, allowing guests to also visit the goats on the farm. Tickets were not required.
The menu and vendors for each week’s Babies and Brunch event can be found on the PFF website, in addition to registration info. However, vendor items are not entirely “baked” yet.
Prairie Fruits Farm is a Grade A goat dairy and farmstead creamery with more than 100 milkers. It is located in far north Champaign. For more information, visit this look back at the farm (pre-pandemic).
