Even in a “typical” August, many families struggle to meet the vast back-to-school needs for kids – supplies, clothing, shoes, hair cuts, and more.
Of course this is August is hardly typical. And as families prepare for back to school, many families are also preparing to have their student – often times multiple children – learning in the home.
At-home learning has led to many families to prepare an adequate learning space for those students, and as a result, have needed even more resources – from desks to lamps to white boards and more.
The good news is that many organizations, businesses and individuals in our community have stepped in to to make sure that free school supplies get to families and students in need.
Below we have listed several school supply giveaways that have been sent to our attention. Can’t make it to one of these events? Contact your child’s school; many districts have received donations directly and have supplies to distribute.
Please note that school supply giveaways may have specific directions – and may be exhausted quickly. We have done our best to provide specific instructions for how families can access these important items. Please read carefully.
Salvation Army, Champaign:
The Salvation Army of Champaign and Walmart teamed up earlier this month for Stuff the Bus, an annual campaign designed to raise in-kind gifts to assist teachers serving at-risk students and families who are in crisis as a result of medical issues (including COVID-19), unemployment, homelessness or other difficult circumstances who otherwise wouldn’t have the resources to help their students return to school.
Stuffed bags will be available for pick-up from 9 am to 2 pm weekdays at The Salvation Army Red Shield Center located at 2212 N. Market Street in Champaign, while supplies last.
Most of the bags contain school supplies such as notebooks, pen/pencils, eraser, scissors, calculator, ruler, marker and glue sticks.
