Drop off your old televisions, computer monitors and other electronic items for recycling in Champaign-Urbana
The city of Champaign has announced that it will host its Fall Residential Electronics Collection Event over two days: Friday Oct. 9 from 1-3 pm and Sat, Oct 10 from 8am-noon.
Pre-registration is required to participate; registration will open on Sept. 1.
As in previous events in recent years, area residents can sign up for a 15-minute time slot to drop off their used electronic items for recycling, free of charge. The registration procedure has cut down on long wait times that had been the norm in previous events before the registration system was put in place.
To register, simply visit the website beginning Sept. 1. If you need assistance with registering, please email firstname.lastname@example.org on Sept 1. As part of your registration, you will select one of the 15-minute time slots to bring your items. This helps keep wait times to a minimum.
WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED
There is a four television limit per person/postcard and a seven item total limit. This collection event is the only cost-free, local option to dispose of an older, tube-style television. More info on what is accepted and what isn’t accepted is available at the registration website.
COVID-19: IMPACT AND PRECAUTIONS
The city of Champaign’s spring Residential Electronics Collection was cancelled in late March, due to restrictions related to Covid-19 and the stay-at-home order in place at that time.
The spring event was supposed to take place on Saturday, May 16, 2020.
Of course in the months since then, many people have been cleaning out their homes perhaps more than usual – causing a backlog of items needing to be recycled.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, necessary safety precautions will be in place. “We request that participating residents remain in their vehicle at all times during the event, and to wear a mask to remain protected when their vehicle door opens for the event workers to collect electronics from your vehicle, or if it is necessary at any point to speak with an event worker.”
The event will take place at Parkland College, 2400 W. Bradley Avenue in Champaign. A map of the specific location within the Parkland campus will be provided on your confirmation postcard.
Residency requirements to register
At this time, 18 cities and villages within the County have agreed to participate in helping to support this
event. Persons residing in the following Champaign County communities are eligible to register: Bondville, Broadlands, Champaign, Fisher, Gifford, Homer, Ivesdale, Longview, Mahomet, Ogden, Rantoul, St. Joseph, Savoy, Sidney, Thomasboro, Tolono, Urbana and Unincorporated Champaign County.
