It’s the Lenten season, and that means FISH! Some Christians observe Lent by abstaining from meat the entire 40 days of Lent; others just avoid meat on Fridays. Whatever your tradition, we are here to help you find the best Fish Fry events and fish specials in and around Champaign-Urbana. Special thanks to all our readers who helped us crowd source this list.
The Church of Saint Mary: Partnering with St. Patrick in Urbana, they will offer Lenten Dinners, including fried fish, baked fish, Mexican, and vegetarian options on Fridays during Lent from 6-8 pm. Starting Friday, February 16, the Lenten Dinners are served at St. Patrick Church.
St. Matthew Catholic Church: Starting Friday, February 16, every Friday during Lent from 5-7:00 p.m. in Feeney Hall.
Legends: This campus standby has been serving up one of the best fish sandwiches in town for years. Just don’t go on Unofficial (March 2). The award winning (and alumni favorite!) Fish Sandwich is served every Friday and Saturday, throughout the year.
Culvers: Cod and Walleye fish sandwiches and dinners are on the daily menu.
Pia’s has a good fish sandwich and chips. Icelandic Cod Fish sandwiches are served only on Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Billy Barooz has amazing beer battered fish sandwiches every Friday, also really yummy clam chowder!
Derald’s food truck: “Year-round, the best fried fish in CU is the fish sandwich from Derald’s food truck (usually parked on Mathews) near the main quad.” While we haven’t tested this sandwich for ourselves, rumor has it (or at least our FB feed has it) that it is the best!
Dublins Champaign: Dublins has excellent fish and chips (and even skinny fish and chips) year round, but the Breaking News of 2018 is Dublins is now the new home of the Chambana Famed De Luxe Fish Sandwich. The famed sandwich is only available on Fridays and Saturdays, using the Famous De Luxe Billiards recipe.
Urbana Gardens has all-you-can-eat walleye every Friday.
Boomerangs Bar and Grill has awesome fish sandwiches on Fridays!
Bunny’s: The Friday special is a beer battered walleye sandwich and chips for $6.25.
