You can pre-order a local Triple S Farms turkey for Thanksgiving at Common Ground Food Co-op. These Heritage Breed turkeys are raised on organically certified pasture, antibiotic and hormone free on a farm 50 miles away from the Co-op. You can save 50 cents/lb when you order before Nov. 18 plus get up to $12 off on store coupons. A $20 deposit is required. You can choose your preferred size by ordering in the store or online.

In investigating the options for a locally and humanely-raised turkey that promises to be juicy and delicious, I have been delightfully surprised at how many incredible options we have! How does one decide?
Art Mart, Champaign: Art Mart is offering Heritage Turkeys again this year. Clover fed, locally raised turkeys from Bane Family Meats are pastured raised, with no antibiotics, no hormones, and no GMO. They have a very limited supply of large (21-24 lbs) birds available, and you should call now to reserve yours for the best availability. Call 344-7979 and ask for Brian to reserve yours, or email Brian at email@example.com. $4.49/lb.

Olde Time Meat and Deli, Champaign: Olde Time Meat and Deli has fresh, Amish, free-range turkeys for $3.49 lb. You can call to pre-order your turkey, as the 750-800 or so birds that they have ordered this year are first-come, first-served. (217) 355-0000. Turkeys range in size from 10-14 lbs, 14-18 lbs, 18-22 lbs, 22-26 lbs. Cooking for a smaller crowd? They are also offering bone-in turkey breasts for $4.99 lb and bone-less turkey breasts for $5.99 lb. Grandpa only likes turkey legs? You can get selected turkey cuts as well.
Caveny Farm, Monticello. A best kept secret for turkey and lamb in Central Illinois, Caveny Farm, located in Monticello, still has some Heritage Turkeys available this year. They have a few sizes left of Frozen and uncooked Bourbon Red Turkeys (the farm specialty) and also a selection of Smoked Bourbon Red Turkeys available for online pre-order on their website, where you can indicate your desired size of bird and also pick up location.
Needless to say, our choices are many and all promise a moist, delicious centerpiece for your holiday meal. I don’t even know how to choose, but I’m actually excited about eating some local Illinois turkey this year, and even having some (or savoring the) leftovers …
