Here are a few of our favorite low-commitment day trips: A black bear at Wildlife Prairie State Park just outside of Peoria. Photo by Todd Ryburn on flickr Wildlife Prairie State Park, near Peoria: You’ll see things here that you’ll likely not see anywhere else in central Illinois. Peoria Zoo: While you’re in the area, might as well hit the Peoria Zoo, which offers an efficient layout. Peoria Riverfront Museum: It has a five-story screen theater that plays a variety of 2D, 3D and educational movies. Yeah, we thought that might get your attention. Imagination Grove, Funks Grove: Aptly named, Imagination Grove is a part of the Sugar Grove Nature Center and features a variety of natural playground options. Children’s Discovery Museum, Normal: This is what a children’s museum should be. Miller Park Zoo, Bloomington: Yes, we love zoos. So if you’re not interested in venturing to Peoria, here’s an option a bit closer to C-U. Ovation Cinema, Bloomington: We discovered this gem last winter. Pro tip: Buy your tickets online because the theaters are small and popular movies sell out quickly. Children’s Museum of Illinois, Decatur: Toddlers, in particular, will love this place. Illinois State Fair, Springfield: Our fair expert gives you the low-down on the Illinois State Fair. Various Lincoln sites, Springfield: We’ve curated a list of Springfield sites to see. Brookfield Zoo, Chicago: The dolphin show is a must-see. Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, Chicago: This might be the best Chicago attraction you’ve never visited. Chicago Bears training camp, Bourbonnais: This is the best way to get up-close and personal with the players. Clinton Lake Beach: Yes, we have a beach in central Illinois. And if you haven’t visited, you’re missing out.
