Our neck of the woods (no pun intended) has more than a few areas that are great for hiking. So we asked our readers for their recommendations on the best places in the region to enjoy a good hike. We collected the responses from our Facebook page and have curated them for you here. (Editor’s note: These recommendations are those of our readers and are not endorsed by Chamabanamoms.com.)
Turkey Run State Park: This spot drew the most acclaim from our readers. “Turkey Run makes a great day trip. Amazing trails there.” “Love Turkey Run.” “Turkey Run is beautiful.” “Turkey Run is the BEST.”
Allerton Park: We have raved about this area gem in the past, and our readers appear to agree when it comes to hiking. “Make sure to check out the ‘wild side’ trails on the other side of the river. Our kids loved those.” “Allerton has some really nice trails and is close for a quick day trip.”
Kickapoo State Park: “Kickapoo is very close and good for tubing and canoeing also.”
Homer Lake: Not surprisingly, Homer Lake was popular among our readers. “Homer Lake has trails, not hilly, but a close place to go for a little fun.” “Homer Lake!”
Forest Glen: Another popular Vermilion County spot. “Love Forest Glen.” “Forest Glen in Westville is really neat. Lots of neat trails and a fire tour to climb. It’s one of our local favorites.”
Walnut Point State Park: Multiple mentions came in from this spot near Oakland. “Walnut Point is great for hiking and they have a little area with a playground and a small cafe.” “We used to take the kids to Walnut Point State Park. Probably way out of the way for Chambana folks but for those folks farther south it is a nice day trip.”
Farther from C-U, Starved Rock State Park was the popular choice.
