Does your dad view sushi as fishing bait? Does he think salads are strictly for rabbits? Has he had his cholesterol checked lately? Ok, forget that last question. It’s Father’s Day, a day for dads to relax, enjoy, and not think about cardiac risks, right?
If your dad — or any dad in your life — is a meat-loving carnivore (like mine), make his day by treating him to a meal at one of these area restaurants where lettuce is just a garnish, and not the main dish.
Burgers: Meatheads (1305 S Neil St, Champaign) or Five Guys Burgers and Fries (901 W Anthony Dr, Champaign.) Both places specialize in big, juicy, delicious burgers. And their fries are pretty good too!
If you’re looking for a great sit-down hamburger place, try Farren’s (308 N Randolph St, Champaign). The people around here tend to rave about those burgers.
About 20 minutes outside of Champaign, locally-owned Dewey’s Drive-In in Farmer City has been serving up delicious burgers for years. Their ice cream is also not to be missed!
Wings: Buffalo Wild Wings (907 W Marketview Dr. in Champaign or 1335 Savoy Plaza Ln in Savoy.) This is definitely my husband’s favorite pick and is quickly becoming my 8-year-old son’s favorite restaurant. Wingstop (512 S Neil St, Champaign) is also a popular wing eatery in the area.
Steak: Alexander’s Steakhouse (202 W Anthony Dr, Champaign) or The Ribeye (1701 S Neil St, Champaign). Both are longtime local establishments that have mastered the art of grilling a steak.
Texas Roadhouse is also a favorite place for locals to get a steak. Just try not to fill up on those yummy rolls served fresh and hot with cinnamon butter.
Barbecue: Black Dog. Burnt ends. Yum. Enough said. (201 N Broadway Ave, Urbana)
Li’l Porgy’s Barbecue is my dad’s personal favorite. When he’s here for a visit, we almost always stop in for a barbecue pork sandwich with mixed sauce, fries and a lemonade shake-up. So good! Try one of two locations- 1917 West Springfield Avenue in Champaign or 101 West University Avenue in Urbana.
Sausages: For something different that many dads are sure to love, try The Bayern Stube in Gibson City. The restaurant offers authentic, German cuisine sure to satisfy any schnitzel, strudel or sausage craving! They also have a variety of traditional German beers on tap. Guten Tag!
With so many amazing restaurants to choose from in the Champaign-Urbana area, it’s hard to include them all on this list. If we missed your favorite spot, let us know where you’ll be taking Dad this year in the comments!
