When I last wrote about the baby bibs, someone suggested I join Freecycle. This is a great swap service, generally adminsitered via a Yahoo! group, where you list your stuff and someone else raises their hand and says, “Hell, YES, I want that big ball of string you’re trying to get rid of!”

Two weeks ago, Sarah Welch from Buttoned Up told me that all I needed to do was follow the 80/20 rule. In other words, 20 percent of the junk on that counter was creating 80 percent of my problem. She said I could tame that mess in 20 minutes if I just followed that simple rule. I gave it the old college try.

I don’t have hours to spend sifting through the landfill of crap in my work area. But all I need to do, says organizational wiz Sarah Welch, is take a few minutes to identify the biggest culprits of the chaos and then put some systems in place to prevent it from happening again.

Part of purging my house of stuff we no longer use is organizing all the items we decide to keep, and this week as part of my pledge to live with less in 2010 we set about doing some serious sorting and getting some new storage solutions.
