We’re starting to get questions from our preschooler. Why don’t we have a Christmas tree, mama? Why don’t we have lights in the dark in front of our house? Why, why, why?

Being a Jew in C-U: The Kosher Thanksgiving (and other anomalies)

Thanksgiving is a very special holiday for my family because it brings everyone together. That may seem odd and incongruous — there’s so many Jewish holidays over the course of the year. But I have several cousins and aunts and uncles who practice various shades of observant Judaism. So Thanksgiving was the one holiday where everyone could be present — where there were no barriers to participation. And to pull it off, it had to be kosher.

Over the years living here I’ve found much humor in being Jewish in a cornfield. And in my column “Being a Jew in C-U,” I’ll dish on what it means to be just that. Maybe you’ll learn something about your neighbor you didn’t know before. Or maybe you can relate.
