A local organization is using the tools of music education to empower girls in the Champaign-Urbana area.
Girls Rock! Champaign-Urbana is holding an open house on July 22 and two separate workshops for youth and adults on Aug. 5 at the Independent Media Center.
The events are intended to “create a culture of positive self-esteem for girls in the Champaign-Urbana community.”
According to the Girls Rock! Champaign-Urbana website, “Teaching girls how to start a band, write a song, record a track, and play a gig are simply the means by which we hope to achieve this goal, as an investment in our future.”
The open house will be held on July 22 from 12:30-4 p.m. at the Independent Media Center and will provide an opportunity for participants to learn more about Girls Rock! The event includes instrument stations, live performances, arts and crafts. It’s free and for all ages. No musical experience is required.
The August 5 workshops offer attendees “a chance to learn about guitars, bass, drums, keys, turntables and yourself!” Workshops are open to girls, transgender folks, and gender nonconforming folks. No musical experience is required. Registration is first come first serve.
The Girls Rock! workshop is for those 8-18 years of age and will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Independent Media Center.
The Ladies Rock! workshop is for anyone 18 and up and will be held from 12:30-4 p.m. at the Independent Media Center.
Tuition for both workshops is on a sliding scale with the full tuition being $25. To register go here.
