Haven’t taken the plunge to take your toddler or preschooler to the dentist? Does your older child need a cleaning? Want to have some teeth-related fun?
Head over to the Illini Give Kids a Smile Day on Saturday, April 20, at Lincoln Square Mall and children ages 1-17 can receive free dental exams, cleanings, and fluoride treatments. Exams offered qualify for state-required dental exams for Kindergarten, second, and 6th graders. Kids will also receive free toothbrush kits. There is no appointment necessary, and the event goes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
(Our advice: get there early, particularly if you are seeking an exam; and bring your patience! In the past we have had a link to forms that needed to be filled out, so make sure you have some basic information about your child so s/he can get checked.)
While at the event, participants may visit with the Tooth Fairy, the Delta Dental Tooth Wizard, and watch the Twin City Derby Girls. Other activities include face painting, a coloring contest, healthy food bingo, and more.
The event is sponsored by the Illini District Dental Society, Smile Healthy, and the Champaign Urbana Public Health Department.
The American Dental Association began the Give Kids A Smile program in 2003 as a way for ADA members to join with others in the community to provide dental services to underserved children. The program initially began as a one-day event in February, but has since grown to local and national events year-round. Dentists and other team members volunteer their time, and services, to provide screenings, treatments and education to children throughout the United States. Each year, approximately 450,000 children benefit from more than 1500 events, all because of the efforts of 40,000 or more annual volunteers.
