Weekend Planner: Spring Break Kickoff Edition

It may not feel like spring outside yet, but now that Jarling’s is open, Daylight Savings Time is behind us, and March Madness is coming up — it’s time for Spring Break. (Don’t miss our survival guide).

As the University of Illinois students depart town (cue my flashback to the college Panama City, Fla. trip), this is a great time to head to campus and explore — or try a new restaurant or two.

Why you should go: Ahoy Mateys! Sail on over to the library for an afternoon of pirate adventures with Miss Beth. We’ll make pirate props, brush up on our pirate lingo, try out a few swashbuckling games and search for lost treasure!

What: St. Patrick’s Day Crafts at the Spurlock Museum Zahn Center Open Hours
When: Saturday, March 16, 1 – 4 p.m.
Where: Spurlock Museum, Urbana

Appropriate for: All ages
Why you should go: We love the creative crafting opportunities at the Zahn Center in the Spurlock Center. If you want to feel the luck of the Irish, head over there on Saturday.

What: Illinois Men’s Tennis vs. Virginia and St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Where: Atkins Tennis Center, 1800 S. Wright St., Urbana (entrance off of St. Mary’s Road)
How much: FREE
Appropriate for: all ages!
Why you should go: Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with University of Illinois men’s tennis.  Free shamrock shakes and green cotton candy, Champaign Park District Irish Dancers will performance at the break St. Patty’ss Day activities and games.

What: UFLive! presents Yellow Jacket Stringband 
Sunday, March 17, 2 p.m.
Where: Urbana Free Library
How much: Free
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: Come hear what all the buzz is about and enjoy an eclectic mix of old-time, blues, Irish, and Cape Breton tunes with our guests the Yellowjacket Stringband. The group features Kate Fritz on fiddle and banjo, Claire Johnson on fiddle, and Tom Turino on guitar, banjo, and accordion.
