What: Prairie Breezes Mini Concerts for Kids Presents Derick Cordoba Jazz Trio

Why you should go: Kick off a musical weekend here – Join the Derick Cordoba Jazz Trio as they bring swinging rhythms and irresistible melodies together for jazz favorites from the great American songbook.

What: 2012 Illini Marching Band Championships
When: Saturday, Oct. 13 all day (till late in the evening!)
Where: Memorial Stadium, Champaign
How much: $10.00 Adults, $2.00 for Students and children,
Why you should go: This is a huge annual event featuring high school marching bands from all over the state competing. There will also be two exhibitions by the Fighting Illini Marching Band – click on the link for the full schedule ( about 2:24 p.m. and 9:04 p.m.). Seating for IMBC will be in the West stands only; access will be through Gate 18 of Memorial Stadium on the West side of the field. (Hint – if you’re not going to the event, avoid the stadium area on Saturday.)
What: Reaching Out for Answers Disability Resource Fair
When: Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Lincoln Square, Urbana
How much: Free
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: Discover all the organizations in our community working to help people with a wide range of disabilities or special needs, as well as their families and friends. There will also be live entertainment; children’s activities including face painting and inflatables; prizes; and an opportunity to browse the Disability Pride area, where nearly 20 entrepreneurs with disabilities will be selling art, photography, crafts and much more. New this year – find the Adaptive Games hidden throughout the Expo. Once you locate them, turn in your evaluation for a chance to win prizes!
What: Kids@Krannert
When: Saturday Oct. 13, 10 a.m. to noon
Where: Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion, 500 East Peabody Dr., Champaign
How much: Free
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: It’s a morning of hands-on artsy fun for the entire family, featuring a variety of demonstrations, art projects, dance, music, storytelling, and other exciting events. We love these events!
What: Tree for All Festival
When: Saturday, Oct. 13 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: various downtown Urbana locations
How much: Free
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: Enjoy crafts for kids – create wind chimes or paint a mural (11 a.m. – 4p.m., click for exact details). Dance at the swing concert (5 – 8 p.m.). Learn about why Urbana is a designated Tree City USA. Music all day, trees, and the arts – what could be better?
What: Marching Illini in Concert
When: Sunday, Oct. 14, 3 p.m.
Where: Assembly Hall, Champaign
How much: Adults $10 ($8 in advance), Seniors, students, children 12 and under $2
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: Marching Band weekend! Enjoy this concert — great show, not as long or as pricey as an Illini game!
What: Edison Middle School Band Children’s Concert
When: Tuesday, October 16, 7 p.m.
Where: Edison Middle School, Champaign
How much: Free
Appropriate for: Focused on 0-8
Why you should go: Your kids will love to hear music from all their favorites including Cars, Sesame Street, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mary Poppins, The Incredibles and more. The members of the 8th grade concert band will play; after the concert, the band members will stick around to talk to children about their instruments and their music.
