Weekend Planner: Into August Edition

August is here. That means the days are getting shorter, back-to-school buzz is in the air, and many folks are on vacation. This is a fairly quiet weekend as summer weekends goHere are our picks:

The Giving Tree will be headling the Research Park concert on Friday, Aug 3. Festivities get stated at 6 p.m.

What: Outside at the Research Park
When: Friday, August 3; bike activities start at 6 p.m.; music starts at 6:30 p.m.; headliner at 7:30 p.m.
Where: At Research Park, Champaign; behind the building at 1816 SOUTH OAK STREET, CHAMPAIGN. Free parking.

Why you should go: A summer fave! Browse the Green Fair for products and resources for sustainable practices, bring your kids to the Bike Rodeo for tips on bike handling and safety; pack a picnic and enjoy some tunes from local opener Mo’ Betta Music (grade school and high school students from the community) and headliner The Giving Tree Band.  GTB spins out ”country folk and driving bluegrass”. FREE!

What: Monticello Movie Night
When: Friday, August 3 starting at 5:30; movie at 8:30ish

movie is free; food is for sale. 
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: Cars 2 will be projected outdoors, next to a showing of antique, classic and muscle cards. Live music before the movie starts! Bring lawn chairs, pillows, blankets, or whatever your movie-going requirements are, up to South State Street in downtown Monticello for a free event that is fun for the whole family.

What: Decatur Celebration
When: August 3-5, 2012
Where: Downtown Decatur
How much: FREE admission; events may be ticketed; concessions available
Appropriate for: all ages
Why you should go: Dubbed the “most exciting family street festival in the Midwest,” this is five festivals in one – Music, Food, Arts & Crafts, Carnival, and Film. Ten Show Stages featuring national and emerging music artists; over 70 unique food items hand-selected for quality and inspected for safety; three blocks of Arts & Crafters; carnival rides for all ages; Razzle Dazzle Goodtimes Parade (10 a.m Saturday, August 4); and a Kids Block featuring children’s games, shows and prizes.

What: Home Depot Kids Workshop: Build a Corkboard
When: 
Saturday, Aug. 4,  9 a.m. to noon
Where: Home Depot, Champaign (820 Bloomington Rd)
