Unless your child goes to a balanced calendar school, public school children in East Central Illinois have about a month until before the first bell of the new school rings (between Aug. 16-Aug. 22). Don’t remember when that is? Check out our guide! This is the second installment of our back-to-school guide for 2012-13
Here’s something to know about first days this year. Many school districts (including Champaign) will have full days of school on the first day, shirking past tradition of children attending for only a couple of hours. In fact, earlier this month Gov. Pat Quinn signed a bill that requires the first and last days of school to be no shorter than five hours. It will be implemented on the close of the 2012-13 school year, but some districts already have made the change for this year.
If your children who are ready for preschool, don’t forget to check out our 2012 Champaign-Urbana area preschool guide as some may still have room for the fall.

Wow–this was the first place I had heard about the full day of school on the first day. Thanks for the tip!
Actually, the new law doesn’t go into effect until 6/30/13, so it looks like Unit 4, at least, may still finish with a short day at the end of the school year, even if they’re doing a full-length first day.
Yes, I noted that above that the law doesn’t start until 2013. According to the Champaign Unit 4 calendar, it will have regular days on the first and last day this (2012-2013) school year.
